Earth movement is a constant danger to tanks in SoCal. The weight of the tank is meaningless however. As long as the stand can slide on something...I.E. Tile....wood...concrete... Then your probubly fine. if the stands sitting on carpet however it will resist moving and the tank will most likely shift...no mater what size it is.

However, when you add the weight of the substrate and fish, you take away from volume of water, so you don't actually have 40 gallons of water in the tank at a given time.
tank weighs 60 lbs.....38x18x18.....With the weight of rocks, stand, and canopy a 40 gallons setup could easily push passed 400lbs.Druu;1237721; said:Truth or not, he's a little off. 40 gallons of water is well under 400 lbs... 320 lbs tops
