i work at a place where we got a little bit of everything, mostly do dog and cat stuff but we got some fish and reptiles at the back, just the basics. So im working today, and this guy comes in, must be around 30 - 35 years of age. Im putting away some dog food that just came in and he comes to me and asks "Hey, where is your reptile section?"
I answer, "In the back right hand corner of the store sir" He then says,
"Thanks, oh and do you guys have any baby komodo dragons in?" I look at him for a second or two to see if he's joking or not. Sure enough he's serious and is actually looking for one, I think to myself, wow, what an idiot, I wish I had one to sell him so in 2 years or so it eats his ass. So I reply with a smirk
"They would be down isle 3 on your right sir" and get back to work as he heads for isle 3.

WOW!!! I spent most of my day AT WORK reading this thread, and seveeral hours this evening reading as well! I haven't laughed this hard in a long time. Actually learned a few new things today too:)

I have to say that the LFS that I use has two Vey knowledgeable clerks. The Fish & Reptile Manager is all around pretty good, a little better with SW than FW but hasn't led me astray in the year that I have been doing this. The great thing is that I can pretty much call him anytime (reasonable) and he will answer questions for me. BTW this is the guy who hooked me up with the FREE 220G tank (Blood, Sweat, Tears and 8 hours of my time draining and moving it form the original owners home). His assistant is a younger kid (early twenties) who has been doing FW since he was big enough to con his parents into getting him a tank. He is the person who recommended MFK to me!! After spending a year asking them both tons of stupid questions and having them teach me as much as possible I am sure that they both would have some pretty good stories about me:D. Maybe I lucked out finding their lfs. I get great advice, they know whats in my tank, what my plans are for my 220, and subsequently for turning my 75 into a Reef once it is vacated, they hold fish and plants for me, they also will hold Driftwood for me. If I need something ordered, they will gladly and if I am on the road when it comes in, they will hold that as well, even though I haven't paid for it yet.
With so many furious and frustrating people out there, I just wanted to pass along that there are the few and far between folks that are great to deal with. Heck, for my lfw guys, I KNOW that being on here lately has made thier jobs a little easier :headbang2

I had one girl (maybe in her 20's, not a kid) the other day come in and looked in each and every SW tank I had, asking for every single fish "What's that?" "Pipefish" "What's that?" "Damsel...". After a few of those I explained about the tags having the names of the fish on them... so then she proceeds to ask "What's a Yellow Tang?" "What's a Dragon Wrasse?"...it was just very awkward. Oooh, and then she's looking at my feeder guppies, and proceeds to tell me one's pregnant and I need to take it out now so it can have it's babies in peace. (Despite the fact that all of them are probably pregnant)..I kind of say yeah yeah I will get to it, to shoo her off, and she's like NO she's going to have babies any second! Put her in another tank! I literally did it just to appease her and make her go away....but no she had to stand there for half an hour watching it.

People also "hand pick" guppies out of the feeder tank...I honestly don't mind grabbing either females or males, or more pregnant ones, but when you want a specific one out of about 500 guppies...it's ridiculous. Same thing with the feeder goldfish, I had one lady practically yelling at me because she wanted goldfish with NO white on them, and one I got had a little white chin. :nilly:

Classic

Well this is a story about my LFS owner. Its not too funny but whatever.

So about a year ago when I just started I got into saltwater tanks first. But as a Christmas present I got a 10 gal. I had no Idea about FW so I go and ask him how to cycle the tank. He told me just to tank a couple feeders and throw them in and when the water clears its cycled:screwy: so the feeders died and then I found this site.

Wow that was lame:(

I amazes me how stupid people can be when it comes to saltwater fish. I work in the only lfs in our town that has saltwater, and when we first opened a lady came in and literally said "I have this nice little vase at home and I'd like to put a nemo in it."

I also had to actually explain to a girl why she couldn't keep a "dory fish" (regal tang) in her fish bowl.

We also have a petland nearby, and their fish manager and empoyees know absolutely nothing about fish. It's a shame because they used to have a lot of knowledgeable people there. I've been correcting so many of their mistakes lately. A couple of our regulars came in and said petland sold them bala sharks for a 1 gallon tank, she asked me why they died, I laughed and told her how big they get, and she said she'd never go to petland again.

They've also been selling people iridescent sharks for tanks as small as 10 gallons, so I tell people who have them that they better plan on upgrading and tell them how long they get, and I hear a lot of "oh yeah, I'm going to get a 55 gallon in a few months." Yeah, better think about getting 10 times that size, tomorrow.

Me and my friend frequent an lfs in Brooklyn called Ocean Forest. It's a cool Asian style lfs with an awesome variety of fish. I hang out in the freshwater section and my friend looks at the saltwater stuff. Every time he goes in, he gets into a fight with the same employee who refuses to take ANYTHING out of the frag tank. My friend tried on 3 occasions to get a Mussel out from under the rack. He finally got it, and it was cool for about a month, then it burrowed and he never saw it again. Then his Shrimp ate it.

There was also a really cool saltwater (surprisingly haha :D ) lfs around here that had some insane saltwater predators and oddballs. But there was one employee who had a few screws loose and walked around in his underwear. He once suggested that in my 30g I sell all my fish and do a "shark tank", with "Iridescent Sharks, Silver Arowanas, Bala Sharks, and Freshwater Stingrays to clean the bottom". He then said that he tried keeping Arowanas but they always died, so saltwater therefore is easier that freshwater. When I asked how big the tank was, he said 30g. Idiot.
