"Oh, they will die before they get that big"
i get this all the time, it absolutely sickens me how little these people care about their fish.
a few weeks ago a customer traded a huge 15.5" pleco to the store i work at and i have to say, he is very useful in showing people how big common plecos get. since he came in, our sales of baby common plecos have decreased and our sales of ancistrus, rubberlips, and peckoltia have gone way up

I remember at my LFS this lady was looking at the longfin albino BN plecos yelling at one of the employees telling him he is crazy for trying to sell a "suckerfish" for so much money (12.99).

My LFS had a giant pleco for a few days. It was in some kind of 50g or 65g breeder and the pleco was about two feet long. Looking at that pleco you could not imagine a tank with enough algae to sustain it for more than a week. The pleco had a very difficult time turning around in that tank.

I think they may have moved it into a bigger tank in their basement or put it in their 20ft custom tank now.

Big common fish are definitely great examples for people to see.

I was in petsmart and a customer asked an employee what was wrong with these oscars and the guy was like nothing they just are a different type. I walked over because I felt bad for the customer and was like no they have hole in the head disease which is a very serious disease if not treated properly and right away. The employee over heard me and told me I didn't know what I was talking about and that i needed to not make up fake sounding diseases and leave his customers alone. 5mins later his manager came up and told him they needed to move the oscars to a quarantine tank in the back to treat them for hole in the head. He couldn't even look at me. The other customer laughed though.

I got a story now :D

One day I was in petsmart with my 2 friends and this guy walks in with his 5 yr old kid and the kid runs up to the tanks we are looking in, tugs on my arm, points at a guppy and yells "It's a FISH!!!", then runs over to another tank accross the room, still dragging my sleeve, and again "IT'S A FISH!!!" Ok....a little strange...and of course his dad pesters him to stop...but no we need to yell at the top of our lungs one more time. He runs over to the center of the fish tanks and once again "IT'S A FISH!"

Meanwhile I just smile and reply "yes it is" before all of us walked to another isle to avoid them until he left. Fun times.

Yay this go moved back to general aquaria discussion :)

I asked my teacher what he was gonna get for his 5g after his goldfish and pleco died, adn he said "whatever strikes my fancy at the store" :screwy:

Ive had people and customers make similar asumtions of me too! I usally wear a t-shirt with a metal band on almost all the time, heavy metal hoodies, and have longish hair and they asume and even asked me once or twice if ive smoked weed! i say no not even had a drag off a normal cigarette! i dont even drink very often!

I thought not frequenting the local pub regularly was against the law in the UK. The huge selection on tap is my favorite part of the UK!

That reminds me of my LFS when kids run up to the indoor koi pond screaming at the top of their lungs "FISHIES!!!" and then almost trip over the ledge and fall in

I always try to go the LFS when kids wouldn't be there just to save my eyes some damage.

I had one girl (maybe in her 20's, not a kid) the other day come in and looked in each and every SW tank I had, asking for every single fish "What's that?" "Pipefish" "What's that?" "Damsel...". After a few of those I explained about the tags having the names of the fish on them... so then she proceeds to ask "What's a Yellow Tang?" "What's a Dragon Wrasse?"...it was just very awkward. Oooh, and then she's looking at my feeder guppies, and proceeds to tell me one's pregnant and I need to take it out now so it can have it's babies in peace. (Despite the fact that all of them are probably pregnant)..I kind of say yeah yeah I will get to it, to shoo her off, and she's like NO she's going to have babies any second! Put her in another tank! I literally did it just to appease her and make her go away....but no she had to stand there for half an hour watching it.

People also "hand pick" guppies out of the feeder tank...I honestly don't mind grabbing either females or males, or more pregnant ones, but when you want a specific one out of about 500 guppies...it's ridiculous. Same thing with the feeder goldfish, I had one lady practically yelling at me because she wanted goldfish with NO white on them, and one I got had a little white chin. :nilly:

BTW, Won't people EVER stop steryeotyping Petsmart (and "PetCo") employee's sure their are some that suck. But some are very knowledgeable and are their to help.....

OK. I was in Petco and Petsmart last night. I don't go to them often. I must say, although I don't ask "test" questions, the employees where knowledgeable and the fish all looked great. I don't often buy fish from Petsmart but they happened to have some nice ones that I have been looking for. All the LFS have been out of them. I was chatting with the girl that was carefully bagging my fish for me. She asked a few routine questions, and had me fill out paperwork because of the dollar value involved, that led talk of monster fish. Pacues came up and I said I can't believe stores sell those to the average person. She said the store policy is to stock them but that they try hard not to. +10 for her "forgetting" to put them on order.

I had a customer once swear up and down that his bristlenose pleco was extremely venomous and it murdered his fish, therefore he had to flush it.
