I love this thread! Here's one of mine from going to petsmart (I know, but their fish are often healthier than at my LFS, and they have a wider selection sadly)
Me: Hi, I was wondering if you have any Senegal bichirs (I pronounced it correct too, the guy at petco told me how it was pronounced
Employee: No, we don't carry any biker fish. (gives me a dumb look)
Me: I'm pretty sure you do, they are listed online. I think it as dinosaur eels it was?
Employee: No, we don't have dinosaur fish (gives me another dumb look)
Me: Are you sure? Senegal bichir, part of the polypterus family with the ropefish? Long, snake like look with the spiky looking fins? Kinda tannish?
Employee: Oh ya we have those! The dino eels!
Me: Ya, they are also called Senegal bichirs!
Employee: Ya we have dino eels, but not biker fish, whatever those are..
Or another time I went in to petco
Me: Do you think it would be okay to keep female bettas with male fancy guppies in a 55 gallon planted tank? I'm worried about fin nipping.
Employee (certified aquatic specialist, with a degree in marine biology and what not)- No, they should BREED together, although there is a chance that they will produce offspring.
Or at an actual LFS
Me: I want to get a couple of the feeder guppies. I'm going to choose them, so I know they are 50 cents each.
Em: Okay, just show me which ones.
Me: Okay. That boy right there (pointing to a bright yellow male with a visible gopodium(sp)
Em: That one, okay but that's a female.
Me: No I'm pretty sure that's a boy. He has the long, thin modified anal fin, the females have the triangular fins
Em: No, that's the boys that have triangular anal fin
Me: (confused) oh okay.
So I come home with 5 "males" surprise surprise, ALL are females. And I was right.
