FINALLY: HYDROLYCUS ARMATUS!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had a stressful day with my armatus. I got home from work and noticed he had banged his nose really bad on the glass. Since he was healthy I decided he would be fine in the big tank.

Well I put him in there and with-in fifteen seconds my red-tail payara who is about twice his size decided he didnt like him and started kicking his ass. The beating lasted most likely less then ten seconds till I could get the net in there, but it was a LONG ten seconds for me. Fortunately no damage. I decided the red-tail must be moved so I moved him to th 29 till the armatus puts on some size (it shouldnt take long cause I swear he has grown in the two days Ive had him!)

So I sat there and watched for a while. The armatus was a little stressed from the fight and breathing hard so I turned out all the lights on the tank but one, leaving the tank really dim, but enough so I could monitor how the other fish would react. The 8" Indo and 3" indo didnt seem to be bothered. They just swam around staring at me waiting for food with them goofy dat eyes. The aro who is about 10" doesnt seem to notice him either as he of course is at the top and the armatus seems to stay at the bottom. The various doradid sp. I have of course could care less. The only other tank mate is a 5" Nicaraguense cichlid. He started bull rushing the armatus. I didnt want to take a chance so in the 29 he went as well.

Anyhow everything is all fine and dandy and the armatus is swimming around exploring the 125. Im sure in no time flat he will be king of that tank and before I know it Ill be taking out a loan for a bigger tank for him!!! :headbang2 :headbang2

Here is a pic of the two bullies in jail...

That red tail is looking good too:)

He really is a good looking fish! When I netted him out I was surprised at how big he was!

I have searching like mad to find pics of a big red-tail but I cant. I guess Im going to have to hope that by some miracle Ill be able to co-hab these two hydrolycus sp till the tat gets big so I can see once and for all a big red-tail!

thats exactly what happened to me! once the armatus caught up to the redtail in size, i put the redtail back in and they were fine for quite awhile. until armatus got bigger, now he only tolerates bottom dwelers.

if there is only one fish lice on him i would get it off b4 it lays eggs, which it already could have. armatus are hardy fish, except aginst some meds. if the eggs hatch ur in trouble, and i tried a lice med b4 and it almost killed my armatus at a half dose.

What meds do you know of that can cause harm or death? Always good to know. Thanks

I was trying to see a pic of that spot that came in with the armatus around his anal fin. What does it look like? Any pics? I want to know what to look for when I get mine.

I know how stressful that can be to see other fish beating up on the one you really like and just put in with the others. Fortunately it turned out ok for you! Glad to hear it's still doing well!

The armatus has been in the tank big tank for less then 24hours now and is already a finger chaser! When I walk up to the tank he will come charging to the front.

What a bad ass fish to own!

Can you shoot any videos of him? I may have to add a fish to my someday to own list.
