First group of Discus.. some advice

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Oh I see what your saying! I'm trying to decide if I should even get more then?? If all my LFS has stunted ones... IDK about that then

like i said before see if they will give you a refund and try ordering from kenny. his discus are top notch quality and is prices are impossible to beat.

Thanks for your help.. i have given up on the other guy just trying to be an A hole.. I did research on the fish.. a lot of fish write ups contradict each other and are misleading.. So i came here for advice. I have a aqueon water changer.. it's great! I have six tanks.. my 100g is one of the smallest. I keep rays, and rare piranha that are very demanding.. have never had an issue with them. I'm going to add a few more and see how it goes for me. I will up my wc interval.. I'm not doing them everyday.. if that does not work for these fish.. then I won't get anymore.. I have drank the water I'm changing from these guys tanks actually.. cause a write up said it needs to be clean enough to drink.. so I have.. very pristine water.

Reading way too much into my comments. If you decide to get all emotional then so be it. You asked for advice, you got it. The choice is yours.

high post count means nothing i can get 10k+ post count if i just write "yea" or "no" in every thread. but her calling him a noob is quite fitting. im not trying to take sides either but i really dislike when people buy with no research. i have been there and am guilty of it but when it happens to be i make adjustments to fit the fishes needs

I usually have no problem with people being new. It really bothers me when ppl nonchalantly brush off my advice like they know what they're doing. If I didn't want to help, I would rather not comment on posts like these but I'd rather not let people make novice mistakes like not doing enough research. Some fish can fly with little research done over them, but I consider Discus one of the more tricky fish to keep. They are not impossible to raise, just require more maintenance than people think. I do admit I was being a bit harsh, but I still stand by my advice.

Obviously he is a noob with Discus. He just started. So I don't understand how that isn't fitting though.

Hey didn't mean to come off wrong. I am new to this site yes.. discus yes.. but I am not new to fish keeping or keeping harder fish. I know all about filtration and water quality.. fish stress etc.. you came at me like I know nothing and told me to do 80% water changes daily.. you would never build any water column that way! So if you do daily wc to that extreme from the start you would have to do them everyday for the fishes life.. because the tank would never have a chance to cycle. My filtration can keep very clean water. I get 0 toxins in my tank.. the filter and BB kill off those things. Nitrates is the only thing my filtration can not keep in check. A water change will remove those. I treat with prime, any metals in my water would be treated at that point. Do discus need very pristine water.. YES I take your advice on that. Do I have to do daily massive wc to achieve that? HELL NO. I did research on the fish before I got them. Maybe I didn't spend 6 months reading on them.. they aren't that great of a fish to me.. more less a tank filler. They aren't my specialty fish or my main squeeze.. Piranha and Rays are. I don't care to have the perfect specimen, I don't care to grow massive dinner plate discus. I just want a nice colorful fish. If it makes 5" that's it.. so be it.. I don't care. They aren't as important to me as they are to you. I'm not looking for the best there ever were. I would never do wc on that level! In fact when I was younger I killed fish for adding to much new water to the tank. I'm a believer in let your system tank, water, filter etc.. build and cycle to do the work in purifying the water for you. Not adding new water every day. You just have a different approach to keeping clean and pure water. Like I said, I have been keeping very delicate fish for a very long time. Some of the way you came across was a little rude and far fetched IMO. Not wrong.. free advice is worth the price you pay. It was your opinion and that doesn't make it wrong in anyway.

if youre looking for filler fish discus are not it

Crap, Sorry I've been studying for exams for the past 12 hours so my reading is a bit blurred..

Well, I honestly don't understand the point of asking for advice if you didn't care how they were going to be. Try ancient fish. Aro's, gars, polypterus. They don't require such high maintenance like Discus do. Doing 100% water changes does not harm fish. I mean, if it did, then I guess the Discus breeders all over Germany and Asia are a bunch of idiots then. However, it will harm them if pH was not stable and other additives are not removed from tap water. I am done here. Good luck.

lets "study" together ;) lol but the asians are doing more than just 100% lol theyre doing 200% daily. i believe forrest drains his tanks untill the fish are literally flopping around. too intense for my comfort but his quality speaks LOUDER than words. a picture is worth a thousand words but a picture of his fish is priceless
