First Gun **Gun People**

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Apparently the .22 that my dad has is a ruger 10-22... If that's what a plinking gun is.... Is a pellet gun

Don't get me wrong I'm not asking for a .50 but I want something that I'll remember I shot a minute later

The .223 sounds good from is said of it. As does the .308

Semi auto is fine here, hence why we have an AR-15...

I'm definitely going to go shop to shop for advise though

But what does center fire mean?

why, because you said so? :screwy: just because its a fish forum doesnt meant people here dont own guns. and several people here are members of those very forums you speak of.

I am a member of ar15.com, and have been for years, I would suggest going to ar15.com as well. At least 2 or 3 things on this thread, so far, are inaccurate.

It would be like going to ar15.com and asking fish questions, you might get some right answers, but most would be wrong.

Really never heard of a 270 being called a "plinker" we kill deer with 270s

I second the ar15.com motion, but several of us here are member's there and here (like myself).

On ANY forum you go to you must filter out the BS before you get the good answers.

Have you checked ammo prices?

If you plan on shooting alot, you may want to take that into consideration!

If you want a real project gun seriously look into a Savage 10FP in .308. Out for the box its a fantastic rifle to take to the range, punch some paper and also hunt with.

With time and $$$ you can turn that Savage into a competition rifle and if you can practice enough, participate in long range shooting competitions and all. For a bolt action rifle I dont think you can get any more versatile when it comes to what you can actually use if for and what you can actually turn it into then a Savage 10FP.

If you arent looking to drop a grand or two (you would with savage if you decide to get the most out of it you can), seriosuly look into the milsurp rifles. They are cheap to buy, cheap to shoot, and most importantly FUN! Get you an M44 carbine and put a bandolier through it as fast as you can, youll know you shot it for the next week! haha

How much is the stock savage fp?

Or was that the grand or two :p

A stock Savage 10FP is about $500, and I swear the BEST bolt action rifle under a grand!

But if you really want to tighted up those 500yard plus groups you are looking at spending about a grand on glass, and maybe another including rings, mounts, new stock, etc...

here's a pic of the Savage i told you about. Savage 116 weather warrior series, stainless finish, black synthetic stock, left hand bolt, an Accutrigger.

savage's accutrigger has adjustable pull, from like 2-6lbs i think. this is a very nice feature

Hey JC what did you give for this gun. Being left handed myself I can't find anything local that's left handed bolt action I have to order anything I want. so I was wondering what you gave for this one.

Sory for the derail

Not too many people have access to a range that has a 500 yard line, and if your are hunting and you cannot get closer than 500 yards, you need to work on your hunting skills.

In essence 500 yard targets are not really a concern for the normal shooter, especialy one that is new to shooting

I had a 110FP in a 300 Win mag, that was a scary gun.

Find somethng you can be accurate out to about 100 yards, that is all you will ever need......

Big G.... You normally use shotguns for bird hunting.
A 30-30 is a fun gun to shoot and accurate enough if you know what your doing. A great caliber for a starter rifle is .243. Remington makes a sweet model 710 youth rifle. I bought the .243 youth for my wife and she loves it. (not a lot of kick)
The best thing to do is join a gun club and see if other members will let you shoot their rifles to get a feel for what you might like. Another thing to consider is ammo is getting outrageously expensive especially in the higher calibers. If you plan on using the weapon mainly for fixed distance or range shooting look into buying a reloader and make your own. (you'll save a ton of money)
I've owned several rifles and the rifle i use now is a Savage Model 10 .300 WSM.
It comes factory with a free floating barrel, a decent scope, and the accu-trigger.
Basically it's a poor man's sniper rifle. Kicks twice as hard as my Remington 30-06 using the same grain bullets. Another thing to consider is whether you want a bolt-action, pump, or lever action. I prefer bolt because it's easier to stay on target than pumping another round in the chamber. If you have any questions feel free to ask me.

Respects,
Tim
