Fish in backyard creek -ID ?(many pics)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think my fish were spoiled on roseys and goldfish before I got them.:)
Now if they don't see gold they take their time about eating,... if at all !

I noticed these fish die quickly in my tanks ?
I guess the temp change.
Tested water really close to tap.
To hard to catch too.
OH.....they all seem to carry ick !:(

Chubs generally need highly oxygenated water and will die pretty quick in a heated tank without much current.

If you're catching them directly out of the creek with white spots, I'm not sure if that's ich or not, but I have noticed it on sunfish and minnows that live in areas with a very high fish population or poor water.

here are some poor pics,sorry.

Looks like bottom feeder but its mouth is not a sucker ?
I have in bucket w/air.
will get those pics tomorrow.

I looked closely at crawdads and noticed some have blue backs.
I wonder is same kind or different ?

well,..... enjoy pics & thank my son....
he walked blisters on his 10 yr old feet today. ;) :headbang2

It's a sculpin. Can't tell what kind, it's most likely a mottled (Cottus bairdi).

I used to have a banded sculpin (similar species) before he got eaten either by my bullhead or bass.

Here he is (click for bigger)

They are most definately not a bottom feeder (such as a carp or something like that), but are an ambush hunter. They have very large mouths and they'll wait for a fish or other critter to come near and then suck it in and swallow it whole. IME they can eat fish that are 2/3 their size.
Mine ate 3 baby BN plecos. Didn't think anything really liked eating plecos until then :screwy:

unforunately, here in MA, we're lucky just to find a darter... We don't have sculpins here. Chubs and suckers are rare too.

It looks like you have 2 species of crawdads there.

Water tooooo cold !
Our creek is freezing cold all year long.

I wondered about crawdads,Thanks

yup. its bait.

i use a cast net (just drop it over the entire hole:D or a minnow trap or crawdad trap from wally world. stuff some raw chicken and bread in there. it only takes about an hour for them to fill it up.
