Ford explorers

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've been fixing crap like this for years......

I'd never recommend an 4.0L explorer to anyone. They do have an uncanny ability to keep going, but if you have engine troubles it's over. Any engineer building a friggin motor that has a timing chain on the back side of the engine should have his crayons taken away immediately. Piss poor design from the timing chains to the stupid oil pan/ main bearing caps. Have replaced LOTS of radiators.

Envoy same thing. No way. GM has gone down hill a lot over the last decade (from a techs point of view). Grew up on GM and my gf's 06 g6 has made me sour. Spending time in a GM garage recently hasn't helped. But thier 3.8 was one of the best engines ever made hands down.

Myself, I drive a 4.0L Jeep Grand. One of the best motors ever built. I've driven one into the shop with a hole in the block the side of my fist. That's right, still ran. Not a speed demon, not a MPG vehicle but very reliable engine.

Toyotas - Theyre expensive. And should be. Don't break. I worked at one of if not the biggest dealership in N. Iowa and it was a Toyota Dodge strore. 6 Dodge techs, 1 Toyota. Says enough right there.

ok between the 2005 jeep grand cherokee and 2004/5 toyota sr5 sports edition
wich saves more money in parts, reliabilty, mpg ?
wich one would you recommend? because in case it breaks down i dont want to be overcharged if needed to be taken to the mechanic get me

I definitely recommend the Toyota. It will cost more initially but will cost you less in the long run. Much more reliable, cheaper parts, and easier to work on. You could easily do the work yourself.

All right thanks for the response im def going with the 4runner sadly it has to wait till after the holidays and after new yrs on the 5th is my daughters bday so itll be after her bday :) but im def getting the toyota and selling my truck

Safe bet to go with the Yota. Reliability is great. Not sure on mileage. If the jeep has a v8 they can be thirsty. Flipside the Yotas are gutless, yet power just breaks stuff. I'm unaware of engine issues in Yotas. Jeeps have some with thier v8s.

I like Jeeps myself, but theres stipulations that go along with them. Mine's a 4.0 with selectrac. Quadratrack is a joke and I hate autotemp, nothing but problems.

In the long run it's like soda, everyone has their own flavor they like best. All vehicles have strong and weak points, with some weak points being expensive repairs and some being simple yet irritating like proper care.

The newer Toyota's that he is looking at are far from gutless... They're a far cry from those '80s clunkers that went 0-30 in 5 minutes...

I'm seriously laughing at all the mis-facts being regurgitated from the internet here about the Explorers.

I've delt with Explorers for a long time. Tire issues with Firestone for a year? Sure - it was happening to people who didn't take care of the vehicles properly. ANY car or truck will break if you don't operate it properly! And how many of the Explorers on the road today are still running on tires from that many years ago? Think about it.
I've had two Sports that have lasted well beyond anything that should be expected of a mid sized SUV. Both were 4.0L V6 - one was OHV, one was SOHC. They are awesome little trucks for the money. Explorer Forums is a good place for info - REAL info - about these trucks.

Hard to argue with that point..I had a 2000 Expedition but I sold it a few years back because the gas was killing me...different animal I know which is why I didn't chime in on this thread untill now...Most even slightly popular cars have at least one site/forum dedicated to them.I am a member of two different forums for the two cars that I currently have and they are a wealth of information.

I'm speaking from personal experience, and lots of people have been killed in them from rollovers and side impacts. They are not a very safe vehicle and they don't claim to be. You flip that thing and that top comes down one way or another, I just feel like it was a poor design. They're just not my cup of tea personally. *shrugs*
