You dont even use the extra 3/4 inch quick disconnect valve then? The speed and velocity are in those 3/4" output outlets....I agree the smaller can be used for a purging the canister of any large debris without having to open up the canister.

i will purchase a FX5 in the near future and will replace my AP 1000ltr external but still use my AP 1100 external with it along with 2 internals on my 180 i need big filtration for my big fish
just wanted to say the FX5 is by far the best external at the moment! I HAVE TWO RUNNING!been so for a while.
there on my 6x2x2....also filterd by a fluval 405.

The FX5 i have takes inch hose not 3/4. Plus I am too forgetful to remember that i am pumping water out of the tank, so while i am making a cup of tea my fish would be flapping about with no water! mmm... tea
