FYI, $17 aquatop canister

Not at all. Once you adjust it, it's silent. There is a thumb screw rod that sticks out the top and allows you to balance the amount of suction. Too much and it sinks below the water line and not enough and it just floats. Takes a little tweaking, but the surface of my water is shiny!

I've owned every major brand of canister out there. Currently I'm running an FX5 and an Eheim 2217. These aquatops are just as nice as anything on the market IMO.

Really?? Just as nice? The materials are very cheapo. If they were just as good they be in the same ballpark of price. Fx5 has a microchip to compute speed capacity pressure etc, not to mention all the advanced features of eheim. Idk how u can say that with a straight face and i mean no disrespect to you man. Its like compairing a mercedes to a hyundai, they both do the same job but one has more features and better quality!

I'm just saying from what I've heard I personally wouldn't trust it for my fish, a good backup?> Yes < but not a main filter. Like I said its CHEAP for a reason. I've had sun sun products before and they are 95% crap.

I have heard more complaints about FX-5's and also Eheim's, especially considering you pay out the wha for those "bells and whistles" that don't seem to do much anyway.

90% user error. Anyone who buys fx5 or eheim as their 1st canister is going to have issues learning it and maintaining it at 1st.

And the only reason for the fx5 micro bubbles are clogged filter pads, dirty media or a dirty can. ppl think u can just plug it in and forget about it for 6 months, well u cant.

If u like it that's all that matters

It's just funny man. I run probably the two most popular canisters out there on two of my tanks, FX5 and 2217.

The FX5 cannot handle fine mechanical filtration, clogs quick and spits micro bubbles. Sometimes it just spits micro bubbles for funzies (didn't start doing this until it was 2 years old, before any new FX5 fan boys chime in again).
The 2217 is fine in that department but the flow is just ridiculously weak.
Aquatop CF500 has almost as much flow as my FX5, has a built in UV, is easier to clean, and mechanically filters better. Oh, and it's more quiet than an Eheim!
