GREEN TERROR TANK MATES

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
agreed, my gt stood up to an 8 inch Taiwan reefs at 4", reef backed down. tried it again later, Taiwan realized he was bluffing and rocked him
My female gt tried my Oscar and got a reality check. She also tried my chocolate cichlid and got a hard lesson as well. She became a solo fish.

what dithers or other fish would work then
Smaller species silver dollars. Forget the scientific name but they get no bigger than 5-6 inches and very common in the hobby. A group 4 will do fine and you can always do a pleco or striped Raphael catfish

If going the dither fish route, how about a good size school of Denison barbs? I would rather keep him solo than add wasted bioload like a catfish, pleco or SD

As you can see, there are a number of species that share habitat with them on the west side of the Andes, but it is notable, other cichlids, are not represented, with only mesoheros festae, and if you know anything about festae, they are also loners, so not a good idea.

Many aquarists conclude because those from Amazonia ,and Andinoacara from the west are similar.
To me this is a mistake.
Cichlids from Amazonia east of the Andes come from varied cichlid dense communities, so often cohabitat with other cichlids.
Andinoacara are an entirley different animal, and should probably thought of in those terms..

And just as an aside, trying to house them with loner Central Amerians is also a probably a mistake waiting to happen.

To me, they belong as a single scichlid pecies in a tank, (no other cichlids), but appropriate and adequate size west Andiean tetras, and or/other fish from the same biotope.

Where I collect Panamanian Andinoacara (a similar biotope), they seldom share habitat with other cichlids, only large shoals of Characins, (probably 50 tetras, to 1 cichlid, IMG_7099.jpeg and the like) a number of plecos, and a smattering of other odd balls suchas Gobies.

On the potential sizing- I have never seen a confirmed (photo with measuring tape) JD or GT above 12 inches. I have seen both around that size. I do believe it is possible for an individual fish to grow larger than typical for their species, but the average max for both of these species is more like 10".

A 90gallon is a bit small for a community of aggressive/territorial cichlids like the Green terror and Jack Dempsey together, in my opinion. It might work if you get lucky, but is going to be "hit or miss", and the way you'd find out if you "missed" would probably be waking up to a dead fish. Personally I wouldn't try it. There are plenty of interesting South American fish that you could keep with the GT in a 90 however. Pimelodella catfish are fun to keep, very active and come with a few different colors/patterns. Lots of cool place species and other catfish. Some smaller leporinus species could work (just be careful of fin-nipping). Some of the larger tetras like Buenos Aires could also be successful with a green terror. Plenty more SA fish for this tank size.
You could also mix in some non- SA fish if you don't care about sticking to one continent. Senegal bichirs come to mind as a cool tank mate for SA/CA cichlids that usually work pretty well. If you have neutral-ish water, most of these fish are pretty adaptable.

According to the CRC, (Cichlid Room Companion)
rivers where A rivulatus is found average a pH around 7, but can be slightly alkaline, with high pH seasonally.
The pH where A stalsberg in Peru average around 7.0 but can vary in range 6.6 to 7.8.
