Growing up blue

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Small update today, yesterday I took the carbon filter out and doses the tank with prazipro. Will let it sit until Saturday or Sunday, test water and do a small water change (something I struggle with, usually change 50%+).

Will monitor on the weekend for changes in fish behaviour.

They are done their treatment of prazipro, have bought NLS Thera A +garlic, tried to feed them a couple of times, no go, one ate three pellets of it but the other two spit them out, so far they will only eat frozen foods. The guppies loves the pellets!

Soon going to look for two regular JDs as tiny as I can find them and hope for a female.

Debating selling the one EBJD that I think is a female, it’s a hard decision, I want to keep all three of them haha might keep “her” for another few months.

All fish have been treated for parasites. Medication rounds have been complete!

I was cleaning out my tank yesterday and found a couple of baby guppies, only two survived.

They are growing a little bit, one is growing slower than the other two, I think she might be a female.

I’m not really liking one of the “males” (not sure of sexes yet) lower jaw development, he keeps looking more and more like a bulldog every day. He is also the biggest of the three.

They are hard to photograph as they move so quickly.

So upon watching my jd’s tonight, I’m confirming I def have two males.

They are starting to square off with each other. They don’t really bother each other except when they swim in the same areas. They will both flare their fins at each other (sizing each other up) and colour up brightly and swim around and circle each other. And nip at each other. They lip locked once and swam away.

I’m watching them closely as I know I will be rehoming one soon. I have decided to rehome the bulldog looking Dempsey as I’m planning to breed and do not want this look.

The "bulldog mouth" looks like a deformity of some sort, more common in line-bred fish like the ebjd. I personally think it looks kind of cool and gives him some character.

I am kind of attached to them all and would love to keep them all but unfortunately I cannot. I do like the bulldog ones fins and colour the most I like his personality as well...but if I am breeding I don’t think people will want a bunch of deformed fish (even if a few people like them)

so is this a multi generation breeding project then? as you will need to create blue gene dormant carriers and raise them before you can breed any electric blue dempseys.

You are correct, I will need to create my own BG as there are no BGs in my area. It will be quite a while before I can produce any EBJDs as I have to raise these guys, pair one of them with a regular, wait for them to breed and then raise another generation...it is something I have wanted to do for many years.
