jus added a breeding pair of convicts

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Haha excellent. The cover, size and energy of the Africans probably helps them a lot. But i wouldn’t put my money on them living in there for too long.
Amazing setup though. Do you know the dimensions of just the piranha tank Bderick67?

Good to hear, what is the behavior of the cons now?

Srry for kinda hijackin your post.
Regarding the Piranha tank the glass is at 6feet high but it looks like the actual bottom of the tank is 18 inches below the concrete floor. the width of the glass is about 10 feet but the tank also goes behind the concrete rocks on each side for a foot maybe 2. the depth from front to back is about 4 feet.

That is at least 1'800 gallons, i would say on the 2'000 gallons side.
Imagine the feeding videos you could make...in fact imagine the feeders... hehe

Hows the cons and the fry going?

i dunno what happened. maybe the parents moved the babies? i looked in this morning and all my wigglers n eggs are gone but the parents are more "inside" the structure now like maybe the moved them n guarding them inside? when i looked last night all the wigglers were still on the same rock. hope to see the swarm come out when there free swimmers unless they all got caught in the current and dispursed thru-out the tank some how n is now dead? we'll see what happens in the next few days

okay, these parents are tricky as crap. looked back on the same slate of rock today, all my wigglers! lol. i dont know whats going on. hope they all live! ill post an update after i see free swimmers

The parenting of convicts is great to watch. Your in for lots of fun. Don't be disappointed though if all a sudden all the fry disappear. I think sometimes if the parents feel there young are threatened, they'll eat the fry. I have one of my pairs that are one their fourth batch and this is the first batch they haven't devoured.

As for the pair I got in with the RBPs they are showing no signs of spawning, the male is just trying to recover from losing most his tail

give him more cover and caves, and time. i had mine in from december 23rd and they didnt spawn til january 9th. took a lil while and other people say sometimes takes longer. when i move all my tanks i might jus move them to a solo tank or a split 60gal with a fh on the other side because im interested in actually seeing the babies grow up.

Good idea, though it is not much of an existence having to hide all day. Then again same goes for all fish that we put in our piranha tanks..

In fact i really like this idea. Make sure you do not get too attached to the cons though. I can see one getting a bit too chancy outside its structure and getting nabbed by one of the piranhas.

Any pictures of the little structure? What is it made out of?

especially when the con's grow they will look more like a fish steak every day !

Though saying that Dan, imagine a steak (in our context) with fast legs and a feisty swing and jab. I have seen cons fight to live and survive till the last possible moment. Some fish give up after one bite or wound, but cons continue to swim and attack even with no fins and blooding staining the water. Not to say a shoal of hungry piranhas in a frenzy would make short work of two of them though.

i know a shoal can make short work of the cons, but im tellin you guys, theres so much goin on in the tank its hard for them to want to. i kno piranhas are unpredictable but still... i got 9 piranhas fighting eachother, a butti thats punking each n every one of the piranhas so there goin in circles fighting eachother and gettin bit by a butti at the same time. i got an oscar up above them swimming like an alien that has them thinking "wtf is that". then a rock structure in distance with 2 lil cons in the middle of it. they only popout to defend a lil bit then bam, back in the structure. the cons are not afraid and the piranhas are more used to eating pellets at the top of the water then eating live because this is what they were raised on from fry. the nip but i havent lost any fish to them yet. ill let u guys know the outcome.
