Just not pets

There are lots and lots and lots of qualified people that keep the larger species of reptiles whether they be large constrictors, varanids, or crocodilians. Just visit the various reptile forums on the net. Some of the statements made here are pretty blind. Most of the so called "newbies" or impulse buyers are young children. And I think it boils down to parents ....parents should be more responsible and not let their kids keep whatever they damn well please. If youre kid cant pick up his room then he sure as hell doesnt need a nile monitor in a 10 gallon tank. Alot of us keep the various animals mentioned, not as pets, but as research specimens. I like to study varanids. That is my thing. I have kept and keep around 15 different species. And I have indoor and outdoor setups that appropriatley accomodate the species which they were designed for. Z trip youre really only talking about one side of the spectrum, why not praise those that do it right and educate those that arent? Were you born an expert? Or did you start having to learn to care for these things?

True points varanio, you go onto many reptile forums, and you'll see examples of keeping these species fine. There are sooo many big snake breeders (particularly retics/burms). I know of a few crocodilian keepers that have pairs or groups in specialised enclosures, good enough to get them to breed and have room to split them up if things turn nasty. People who knock extensions onto their houses to keep water monitors. There are people that take it so seriously, all over the world, and it is a case of a few ignorant/niave people that spoil it for the rest of us, who can either house the animals, OR are intellegent enough to know your personal limits.

No, I was not born an expert. I have made alot of mistakes in the beigining but now I believe I could not be doing things better, other then making vivariums for my animals...

Yes, I do understand that their are a select few who can take care of animals like the ones mentioned. These people are few and far inbetween. Unfortunatly, theirs about 10 pet stores between them all selling inapropriate animals to people other then the ones who can actualy take care of them. Because of the people who are ignorant like this, it should be spoilling it for the rest of us.

Their should be a specialty exotic animals facility that sells reptiles to people who can take care of them. These exotic animals would not be able to be found in a pet store or on any importer list. A qualified person would make an apointement and come to your house to check up on the animal every 6 months or so. Now thats the perfect world. No Iguana, RES, Nile, or any other animal would suffer ever again.

and so the hobbiest would have to pay for it. I don't understand that there are pet shops that stock animals that don't know anything about them, or are happy to make the quick buck. Personally I tend to deal with breeders anyway- more helpful, nice to have a chat with them too, and i have more on the animals history. They aren't far and few between, there a lot of them. Thousands on forums and even more off forums... a lot don't bother with the internet or at least forums...

This is a copy of your collection from your signature. Now with all that you stated. How would you like a certified person(s) coming to your house telling you how you should tend to your animals? I wouldnt like it one bit 1. because the dumbarse thats telling me what to do probably doesnt even know the scientific name of my animal to begin with. 2. That individual probably was trained by another dumb arse on how these animals are suppose to be taken care of IE generalized caresheet that is suppose to be generalized and fit to be a tool for all species of varanids [ which i am using for my example since this is my area of expertise] 3. And because this person has this "guideline" what some might call stable and suitable conditions this dumbarse that has this "guideline" has the power to make me relinquish my reptiles because I dont have them on calci sand? Most if not all reptile species require different temps, humidity, substrate, lenght width and height requirements for different cage setups. So to get some dumbarse to come and check on my animals and tell me im doing it wrong because I dont have the needed criteria that this dumbarse has on their checklist is just beyond me and I would never support that type of restriction on hobbyists. Notice I dont call them pet owners. You want to be called a pet owner get a guinea pig or dog or cat. Reptile keeping in my eyes is for hobbyists or for research purposes.....that why I keep them. To be part of academia, not to pet my 7 foot long water monitor and watch tv with it. If one of these people were to come to your home and have this checklist with them, how many animals would you have to reliquish because of inadequate conditions?

Sorry mate but I refuse to believe you have nothing to learn. EVERYBODY is ALWAYS learning on reptiles.. no matter how long you've been doing it for. Fact. You might wanna come back down to earth and realise ya no professional?

I am guessing you are having the same opinion about fish as well since they suffer the same problem? What about cats and dogs that live in kennels where they can hardly move all their lives, yet the owners don't get in trouble as they meet all the basic needs?

Face it, people are selfish. They are not really ignorant. They want animals in the smallest space necessary.

I agree, most people dont actually enjoy/want to provide the right size enclosure for animals, they just want the animal to fit into THEIR lives. Whereas if you want a large crocidilian or large mammal you usually have to build your life around THEIR needs.
