Just to get some mouths drooling...

it really is a shame how so many species are being CB in zoos yet their bloodlines are just going to waste, I hate knowing that there are endangered reptiles being bred in zoos and are often getting culled just because they "don't have anywhere to go" why can't they find a medium where they take reputable and well known breeders to help out
I know that there are breeders with the know how to keep the hardest of animals and the larger species too
ugh, it just makes me mad

Then what about things like the water monitor that actually grow larger than the komodo? or the croc monitor that is also quite large but with a temper from hell? Both of these are kept by the private sector and are totally legal even without permits. You mentioned that Pacus cannot be kept by most people but what about those on this site that can and do keep pacus in nice large tanks and who are not most people?
What about them? This thread is about the Komoto.

Exactly, most ppl cannot keep pacu's and the ones that cant and still do post "help me" threads.

so your saying that asking for help means that your wrong and are doing somethign stupid, like keeping a pacu
but what about people who can and do have have the means to take care of a pacu or komodo dragon
in my eyes if you can keep a croc monitor, keeping a komodo would be like keeping a ****zu

Its not a shame. Theres tooo many irresponsible ppl out there. If it were allowed for private breeders to breed this species, eventually they will end up in some idiots house as a pet. Komoto's are not pets and should never be allowed to be...

Never said that. Keep what you want, IF you have the means to properly care for it and the brains to NOT treat them like a pet.

so why not set up a system where you could work for a permit and could only sell to others with permits, it wouldn't be perfect but what is? it would allow genes to be shared and for them not to become muddy and useless

look at rhino igs
there are hundreds in the states, few in dominican and some in europe
those populations genes are soon to become filled with inbred hicks of the reptile world unless someone transfers and trades some animals to allow for the genes to be healthy
the ones in the states are already dirty due to sloppy breeding and hybridizing
so why should it continue when we have the animals to make this a healthy population of pure animals

They should never be allowed into the public sector as pets. Much like the pacu, they simply get to big for most ppl to care for properly and eventually some idiot will get ate by their "pet" komoto...Legalization will never happen....

so you are saying that even something like a pacu that CAN be easily kept in captivity successfully by the public sector should be illegal to own? I own a water monitor and can care for it properly, these guys actually get LARGER than KomoDo's and are legal to keep even as pets and yet have you heard of someone being eaten by them? no.

Also, what about dogs? many people that have dogs do not know how to properly care for them and I have known people to keep large dogs in small apartments, do you think dogs should be illegal too?

I think that anyone with the resources needed should be able to keep any animal they want, be it a Pacu, a komodo dragon, or a great white shark or anything else.

Maybe I just don't get what you are saying but it sounds like that if a few people can't keep an animal properly then no one should be able to.

If such a system could be set up for just breeding to keep diversity in the genes, sure but then what would they do with all the offspring? Sell them to ppl who will abuse it for profit? They will eventually end up in the hobby trade and then let lose in florida/cali by irresponsible ppl to multiply by the hundreds like the anacondas and wild pigs...

there are no anacondas in FL and the wild pigs were let lose for a different reason, you are comparing apples to oranges and since the komodos are so rare then they will not be released into the wild since I can guarantee that their value would never drop below several thousand dollars which would pretty much ensure that anyone who gets one would be taking good care of it because it was so expensive.
