People doing large WC's probably stage the water first in another container, bringing it to needed parameters before adding it to the main tank.

If you're doing large WC's with out this, then there is the risk of hurting everything in the tank, depending on how careful you are with matching dechlor and PH control in relation to the added water.

Plain tap water kills BB. So just adding tap water will set back your bio filtering a bit. This effect is lessened depending on how much tank water is left to dilute this effect, chems added, ect.

I do 50+% water changes quite commonly...

I add tap water & dechlorinator straight to the tank...

The above quote is making some assumptions and speculations that are very frequently not true... no offense...

Every water supplier uses their own mix of chemicals to "clean" their tap water. Eacfh of us has to learn what we can and cannot do safely. Just because your supplier uses large quantities of chlorine doesn't mean mine does... But at the same time just because I get away with something doesn't mean you can...

"plain tap water kills BB"... that is completely untrue... chlorine does, chlamorine does... but not all of us have so much in our tap water that it cannot easily be removed by dosing the tank with dechlor as we add water...

It drives me insane how much speculation and assuption is passed around here written as fact.

Thanks for the replies so far.. personally i have done small and large water changes straight from the tap to the tank for years and adding water conditioner to the tank, never had a mini cycle from it or any spikes of any kind, the main reason i posted this was because of people posting their beliefs as a fact and not just an opinion, different people have different way of doing things that still work the same in the long run, i just wanted some more opinions on this, maybe staging the water is a good thing for someone just starting and to get the feel of things, but it doesn't have to be done, and as far as my experience, large waterchanges have never hurt anything in my tank, just my opinion.

.

welcome to the internet :)

the true reality is, that if your tank is not use to haveing large water changes or even water changes on a regular basis (the later being more important) it can effect the tank drastically. I wouldn't recommend to anyone to do a large water change unless they are doing at the very least monthly water changes of a significant size, and this doesn't include topping off the tank as many people seem to think is alright. (talking mainly of numb nuts coming into an LFS and thinking that adding water is a water change :P )

Psh... at least adhere to your own advise then. Saying that a generally true statement(tap water kills BB) is "completely untrue!" just because .1% of the US uses well water is idiotic. My statements are much closer to fact that yours.

And you're going to argue that mixing in the tank is a risk to everything in the tank? Then you're a fool, giving fools advice. Any one can do it a million times, you've proven that a fool can do it, but to tell a novice that there is no risk at all is ignorant.

It cracks me up when people are total mental hypocrites and don't even realize it.

I'm on city water... again... stop with the speculation and assumptions...

You were kind enough to quote this but next time try reading what you quote -

Wow, long winded way to make no point!

My point, mixing anything in the tank IS a risk.

So how is "plain tap water kills BB"... that is completely untrue? Would you run tap water through your filter?

This is getting old quick… please read my first post as it explains my point and answers your questions…

I turn my filters off during a water change… but I am also not naive enough to think that all of my bacteria lives in my filters…

I say tap water kills BB. You say, how completely untrue! Its the chemicals in there that does it. No ****, sherlock. What do you think my whole point was with the risk of mixing in the tank to deal with such thing were?
