oh please ... if we are going to get off topic then... I have a neighbor with a giant pittbull that growls at me when I go to my back door. have really been considering carrying my .357 again all cause this stupid dog. only thing between me and the dog is my 3.5 foot fence (the dog can easily jump). Sad thing is the home owner is an awesome guy its his looser step son that owns the dog. That dog gets near one of my kids its going down.

Hello; Sit down with your kids and talk to them about the dog. Make sure they understand the danger.
Go ahead and carry the gun now, do not wait.
Get your kids pepper spray if they are old enough to use it.
Install a camera to monitor the action of the dog to collect evidence of agressive behavior.
Point out to the neighbor the financial liability the dog represents.
Check the local laws about what can be done If the dog gets in your yard and make a plan.

I had a neighbor with a pit bull on a chain and no fence between us. I carried a pistol when mowing and being in the yard.

If in fact the dog bites someone, it seems that we can no longer rely on the local authorities to be able to put it down. I hope that dogs are still considered property and destruction of property is still a monetary fine.

Consider making the fence much higher on your side of the yard.

Your original quote sounds like you are defending viscous dogs because it is "gang bangers" causing these attacks. If I am wrong I am sorry but that is they way it reads.

I unfortunately have no solution. I would not be sad if all pitts are gone but that is not feasible. I do think regulation need to be put in place for people that have these dogs. I should not have to feel unsafe for my children because my neighbor doesn't keep a dog on a lead. A dog that has showing aggression. Just like I have to register my fire arm. I think owners of certain breeds have to register there dogs. Any harm comes from those dogs they loose the right to own dogs just like I would loose the right to own my firearms.

No that was an example of a provoked attack. The gang banger part was just where I live. As much as I'd love to hurl attacks against your personal belief system I'll get banned. All dogs should be under direct supervision of the owner ALL. Not sure how your kid getting mauled by a nonfighting breed will make you feel better but given you reference to dogbite dot org it clearly will.

Also backyard counts as a premiss even in NYC. Yes I almost moved there so I'm not imagining it. You can not however step off said property but carrying in your backyard is permitted.

All requires money I don't have. Cameras I really cant afford a fence is little under $1,000 for the fence. I just had the current fence installed last year (before he got the dog) it was to keep my kids from wandering I have 3 that are to young for pepper spray. I spoke with my kids about good dogs and bad dogs. My daughter thinks I am superman LOL she says Daddy you will protect me. I hope I made her understand that we still need to be cautious.

I am trying to figure out how to talk to my neighbor he is a great guy and we have a good relationship its his son that is the moron. I am trying to figure out how to approach the conversation. We are actually planning on moving this year, the dog only being 1 of the issues. I do plan on carrying when I am home and outside.

exactly I have to wait for the dog to come on my property and harm my child. Living in NY I am not allowed to carry so I would have to go in get my revolver and come out all before the dog gets to my family. That means I ahve to be home so what happen the 5 days a week I am at work.

but I am not going to waste anymore time on this topic. nothing ever gets solved and I just get heated and pissed off. Time to go look at some fish.

Hello; In a carry restrictive state like NY perhaps you can find some thing other than a gun to use. I use to keep a length of pipe, an old mower blade, a bush axe and such in quick to reach places in my back yard.
I live in Tennessee and have a carry permit. I was walking today past a trailer park down the highway. There were several dogs on chains, two of which appeared to be PIttbull types. One One barked, growled and made agressive moves from 50 yards away. I hope the chains hold but have already worked out a defense plan. In Tessessee a person is not liable if his/her dog bites you on their own property.

I think what was said that he was directing the attention away from the problem with bringing up 14yo, 18yo gang banger and bad kids. a whole bunch of "ifs" and "buts". the article is talking about a 1 year old getting mauled.

Regarding my problem the problem is do I have to stand guard over my family day and night so they can play on the swing set in my back yard. I guess I will have to quit my job and go on welfare to do so all because someone needs a tough guy dog.

Sorry but I get really pissed about this subject people refuse to look at the facts. My cousin who is very intelligent (Phd) takes in rescue pitts to foster and has three small children all because she has a big heart. One of those dogs is going to flip the switch on her kids and everyone will scream bad owner.

Back to the Lexus subject it is another organization that cares more about dogs than people. they tie up tax payers money to fight in court over a dog that is a killer. this group sickens me.
I didnt take his statements as deflections,I saw them as expanding the types of scenarios,as far as what you are going through...if you need to shoot a dog that is acting aggressively by all means do it.. better that than regret the injury or death of loved ones,as far a your sisters situation ... if she puts others in harms way ..well I hope you understand that I might not agree 100% with you on that one...

Hello; Try to convince the neighbor to be as concerned about your potential reaction as you are about the potential harm to the children.

From dog bite dot org??? They have been discredited by the American Veterinary Association and the CDC every time. You quote from them and have the audacity of accusing me of having an agenda? Impressive.

I honestly think the hammer came down on you when I took your side ..all things being equal.. if i hadn't pointed out that it , in direct contrast to the op ,really was agenda free ,it never would have been an "issue"...and to the op and all who feel that way ,I AM NOT,saying your agenda is wrong or bad, just pointing out that it IS...pretty much LIKE every other controversial thread on here,,,,,,,,,,,, AGENDA ...isn't a bad word amongst the less politically motivated

My agenda if that what they want to call it is simple. I'm tired of getting the short end of the stick because someone else did something reprehensibly stupid or evil. Why should my my friends dog get put down because someone else failed to control their dog. Why should I get my firearms seized because someone else decided that it might be fun to shoot up a school. Why should my taxes go up because someone else felt that they just had to have 6 kids when they cant feed themselves. That in a nutshell is my agenda. As far as dangerous dogs either come up with a specific set of temperament criteria for ALL dogs and make it testable OR drop it. That's my agenda with regards to dangerous dogs. ASPCA has a very specific non breed based test standard, might be a good start.

CGC testing for therapy dogs which both my Pyre and the aforementioned Pitt both passed would be another more stringent version. My pyre is permitted any where while most hospitals will not permit her pitbull. Same test and the pitt is 1/4 the size and less than half the bite strength.

I agree on the temperament testing for dogs. It all comes down to irresponsible ownership of a powerful breed. Don't blame the breed. Blame a stupid owner, I love pits but I have kicked one in the teeth for going after my dog. Was it the dogs fault, no it was the fault of its ignorant owner who let it run of leash on the street. Punish the individual not the whole
