MARBLED/CALICO CONVICT BREEDERS - INFO / GENETICS THREAD

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
NEWS FLASH - Just now, I discovered that two of the fry have paired off ! Male is pink, female is marbled.

(Remember this is the combination my friend had, and had NO marble fry.) We'll see what comes out of this pair!

I guess it is time to start splitting them up according to how I want to line breed / experiment with genetics.

I guess the orange is not showing up in the pics.

I'm not sure what you mean - you said there were no pink - but the female you show is a pink. If a pink convict has no marbling, it's a .... pink.

So, those two are the parents. What did the fry turn out to be ?

Dude, pink is just a color. You can still have a calico with no visible spots that is genetically a calico. Is a solid white dalmatian not a dalmatian because it has no spots? And who's to say that if you took that fish and dissected it under a microscope that you would find no melanophores? We are talking genetics, you need to be more precise when making blanket statements like "If it has no marbling, it's a .... pink."

Also.... My baby calico x calico fry are getting bigger and bigger every day, soon I will be able to start telling you what I got....

Doomie, you still want them right? If you change your mind let me know so I can feed them to my Flowerhorn, otherwise plan on getting them as soon as they are old enough to travel. I got a source of styros and boxes for free!!!

First of all - if it's not pink - what is it? Purple? So yes, obviously, non-marbled pink convicts are pink.

Second of all - you forgot that their mother is a pink convict - so the pink fry are het for calico (depending on the genetics behind this mutation.)

Third - "Calico" is not a breed in itself, like a Dalmatian, but rather, a mutation. In other words, there is no such thing as an all-white calico cat. The markings themselves, are what makes an animal a calico.

It will be interesting to see if any of your fry are pink.

Question for you guys....I've got 4 marbled cons, ranging in size from 1"-3" None of them have the characteristic orange belly of a female. When does the orange start to show? I'm assuming that if any of them were female that it would be apparent by now. I was hoping at least one would be female..

Hey
They would have shown by now - Mine started showing definitively at 3/4 inch.

See my email about the cutteri - I tried to contact you privately with no luck. If none of yours turn out to be female, I could help you out.

Post some pics if you would like - I'd love to see 'em!

Oh! I didn't see an email from you, sorry :( My email is Dispatch273@gmail.com. I'll see if I can get some pictures of them tonight. They are in a 75 and don't stay still for anything, but I'll try haha. I'll certainly take you up on the offer of a female or two :)

I figured they would be showing some orange already if there were any females in the group. Thanks David! Enjoy the cutteri :)

Ok. Here are few not so great pictures of the largest marble con. He is probably the least marbled of the group. The smallest one is the heaviest marbled and of course wouldn't come out of hiding. Doesn't help that my pink/black con pair has a huge spawn and is chasing everyone around the tank haha. Oh and sorry about the glass being scratched and full of algae. Its a really old, beat up tank:irked:
