My 9 yr old son's tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So this is what he came up with
View attachment 946866
He stayed with the rainbow gravel (makes it his he said) and forced me to trade his driftwood for 2 different pieces I had. Just picked up a new bulb today (6700K) and we'll see how it goes.
So what do you guys think, this is the 4th tank he's scaped now, 1st one with real plants. And this time I left him all alone ... all I did was attach the anubias where he wanted it. The tank was lower so he could place things himself.
Good to see he's enjoying this! Dad, supply him with whatever he wants ;-)

It's really awesome you get to share this hobby/love with your son. I can only hope to have kids one day like this. I love the tank!! Great work!

:P argh the rainbow gravel :P Love it! Might get an idea of raising fry since the guppies should breed like hamsters in that :D

I have to be honest and say i'm no fan of colored gravel, but if thats what it will take to make this tank HIS and not YOURS, i say more power to him :)

Every thing else in the tank seems pretty well thought out and looks pretty good (since in my head im imaging the tank with dirt and not gravel)... maybe if this planted tank works out for him, the next Real Plants planted tank you guys create, you can work on it together and make it a high-tech tank with all the bells and whistles...

Oh and by the two of you, i mean you helping him move everything where he wants it, like Takashi Amano's helpers, while your son acts as Takashi Amano and stands to one side pointing and directing where everything should be for the best look ;)

Haha +1!

At least its not a 5gal filled with glofish & albino water frogs with a black light....

+1, and I'm no fan of that gravel, but man he's got some potential! Give that kid whatever he needs and get him whatever fish(preferably monsters) that he wants and grow a new MFKer out of him! I can imagine in just 10 years that little dude posting pics of beautiful monster tanks full of non-colored gravel and plants and dirftwood, and I have an odd feeling he'll like dorados or other colorful monsters in his adulthood.

Why dream so small? Im already imaging him in 5 years entering the international ADA aquascaping contest if he keeps at it :)

he shouldn't move onto monsters yet...bigger tanks are harder to scape and big fish will ruin planted aquascapes.. he will get really frustrated and give up. hes more of an aquascaper than a fishkeeper, which aint bad its awesome.

First of all my son wanted me to thank everyone for their words of encouragement, I let him read what everyone posts.

Great job. I got a 5yr old wanting his own tank, He wants the whole Glo fish setup:irked:., now I guess I'll have to get it and let him set it up too:D. Great job on setting the tanks up, and great job on the dad part:thumbsup:

Do it ... great bonding experience ... and thanks for the compliment on being a Dad.

Hahaha hes defo gona have a monster tank before he hits his teens (it'll cost you a small fortune hahaha:D ) my kids pay interest in.our tanks but I think ive bored them to death with w/cs and fish talk for years , they want a small tank in there bedroom with a turtle or something in but my mrs won't have it downstairs is already like an aquarium :D

Convince the mrs. or give up one of your own tanks like I ended up doing, Its great responsibility for the kid(s). The only thing I help with now is the water changes basically, and his tank looks way better than mine (even his plants look better).

Good to see he's enjoying this! Dad, supply him with whatever he wants ;-)

So far I've made him spend $60 ... and he really like your idea, mind you my wallet isn't so fond of it :)

:P argh the rainbow gravel :P Love it! Might get an idea of raising fry since the guppies should breed like hamsters in that :D
It's what he's hoping for, we'd gotten some guppies off of Craigslist, turns out they were all older males. Slowly replacing his guppies now with both sexes.

Thanks Fat Homer, he was giggling after hearing this. He said it was way easier to plan the tank when he had me placing things for him. But he also really enjoyed getting his hands in the job this last time ... so maybe we'll have to find some common ground for him where he can do both. He actually just learned about Takashi Amano this past summer. We had been going through literature on planted tanks, the photo displays of Amano's tanks really captivated him.

He wants to start small (his choice) .. but just told me he has plans for bigger tanks when he's older. In fact he wants to horn in on my plans for the basement once its developed (grrrrr .... that's my domain) and you could be correct on the types of monsters he eventually keeps down the road.

Once again Fat Homer you peaked my kids interests ... now he wants me to show him what this ADA aquascaping contest is.

He actually agrees with you Pole ... he wants to just stay at a 29G with guppies for now, until he's more comfortable .... so it may save my wallet for a bit ... but then again kids minds do change.

as lame as it sounds that would look interesting with a tank or some soldiers in there = P

He's not into the toy soldiers and such ... although I was surprised he hasn't tried putting any lego in ... but thats probably because he couldn't play with it then (the lego that is)

I myself am not a fan of fake plants or colored gravel, BUT for a 9 year old, who cares! as you said it is his tank and for someone his age that is a FANTASTIC LAY OUT! especially with the tall plants behind the log and the short in the front, definitely a plus 1 for a first tank! *claps*
It's really awesome you get to share this hobby/love with your son. I can only hope to have kids one day like this. I love the tank!! Great work!

Thanks ... yes my son does have vision. I think that's safe to say now ... and yes it pleases me that we have something to share as well as our own with our tanks. It'll be a bonus for me down the road as my body wears out ... he knows he'll be taking over.

Haha +1!

LOL ... very true .... but actually the water frogs are in one of my tanks.
