'Overkill' I don't think so. As we now know that the young piranha has only been in the tank 2 weeks, and it has already been chomping his fish. It would be great if piranhas would co-exist with other fish, but sadly it has never worked, not with home sized aquaria any way.
Tbh, i think it is overkill what you're doing right now.
I asked what you thought about my fish, not my setup.
It's fine that you ask anyway to my setup, and i would politely answer your questions, but for you to continue forcing your opinion on the matter down on me really helps no one i don't think.

And yes, piranhas can co-exist with other fish. It has been countless times, and is still being done. However, there are risks envolved, that i am aware of.

Ps. it has only been nipping one fish, which i should have forseen due to it looking like easy prey when only cruising right beneath the surface of the water.
That fish has been removed now.

I appreciate and respect you guys input, so by all means don't wrap it up in lollipops for me, i'm a grown man :)

I understand your writing and meaning completely, and i actually knew most of what you guys are saying before aquiring this fish.

The problem i'm facing, is that every time i've posted pics of fish along the way to it's current state, and long before i joined mfk, i was always told "A few weeks and this and that fish will be dead" "this won't work for long"
Well it has been going for 1½ years now, with the only damage so far, even with several pairs breeding in there, is the fin nipping from the Piranha, which is only miniscule still, due to his small size, and the fish he was targeting only cruised the surface, which is attracting to predators, and now that he is removed from the tank, i'm going to wait it out and actually see what happens before i start taking any drastic measures, since none of the predictions ever came true before.

And please don't think i'm in a state of denial, cause i definatly am not, but if you don't mind i'm going to see how this works out for me, and not go by a writing of someone who knows someone, who saw something.

Has any of you guys actually tried a similar setup?

This tank is more peacefull than my community beginners tank was 13 years ago.

Thanks :)

like I said in a previous post, I wish you the best of luck. I do not mean to criticize your setup, and I am not trying to go into "overkill." I just merely wanted you to be informed that's all. I hope it works out for you. :)

I haven't tried my shoal with cichlids but here is a video of my community tank.
The Pearl Gourami, Black Tetras ans Raph cat have been with the p's for 3.5 months and everything else has been a few weeks no deaths so far. I have had my p's since they were about the size of a quarter and they are now 5"

Some of you "i know" from around the forum and definetly respect but it's his tank, his money. Continuing to tell him over and over how it won't work is definetely overkill. I'd understand if some 14 year old kid was doing this with his mommy's money and didn't know any better and you were on a rescue mission but clearly the man has done some research before diving into this. I'm surprised he's even been this patiences. Most people would've gotten defensive and left by now. I'd rather he stuck around and told us about his experience

Oh, and no single person is going into "overkill", it's just collectively so many people saying the same thing is overkill. lol

I think you're right, we have given the man our point of view, an as he said, he's a grown up man I think he's aware of what can happen to his fish, so at the end it's his call.

I'd also rather he stays and tell us about his esperience tho.

Cheers.

Not to be a douche or start a fight, but a couple of people have stated in this thread, that Piranhas CAN NOT cohab with other fish.

So i'm sorry alyssa. Your video is deemed fake, along with all the other setups i've seen over the last couple years. PHOTOSHOP MUCH?!

Thanks ballin' for calming down the mob a tad :)

I believe it is recommened that various varieties of cichlids and characins not be mixed due to the following - Piranha not to be housed with other species due to their carnivorous nature and their obnoxiuosly large shark like teeth that can inflict a killing blow with just one bite. Some new world cichlids when breeding command large areas of tankspace, they are bulky strong, very fast, sneeky, and will defend what they believe is their territory to the death, can be more than a juvi RBP can handle. African cichlids are way more toleranate of other species however can be quite relentless in their assualts when pissed off, they are super fast and very determined if they feel the need, so much so, a juvi RBP probably will not survive - in an aquarium ,this community can be a WWE cage match or a very unorthodox peaceful community based on mutually assured destruction.

I do commend you for having a backup plan - enjoy! Hope all goes well for the baby P.
