I wouldn't worry too much. The fish and game aren't worried about the small people. The worst you can probably expect is for them to confiscate the fish you purchased that are illegal. I worked doing raids for 18 years (not for F&G). You can always use the defense that you do not know what is illegal in your area, and you figured if he was selling/getting them, they were okay to buy.

Ya, go with that one...

I'm glad this thread was posted. Being shocked at this is like being shocked for getting a speeding ticket while speeding.

Law was broken, law was in forced. God bless America for doing something about it.

Owner should never had the fish, owner was compounding his problem by showing a new customer (so not really hiding it at all). Lucky they let him keep his store.

Claiming you bought a piranha as a pacu doesn't do anything but make you a liar. You still had the fish, therefor you are still guilty of a crime. Ignorance is not an excuse.

He's been my LFS guy for 30+ years and is a real nice trustworthy type of person.

"Trustworthy", except for that small part where he supports black market trade of illegal animals in the US. :screwy:

serves him right, i have a big smile on my face being that the law was enforced. hopefully this sends out a slight message to cali and the rest of the U.S illegal fish keepers.

We should all be glad that all that money they put into law enforcement is actually being used for its intended purpose. Theres a lot of money out there getting diverted by our officials. Every election all kinds of stuff is "for the children" and look at our schools!
DFG is actually doing what we pay them to do!

I was talking to my LFS guy about piranha (I used to keep them when I lived in Tenn), he told me he knows people locally that order them off the internet. I'd make the 7 hour drive to Tenn, if I wanted some bad enough.

of course, if me as a private citizen ever got caught in posession of a piranha, I'd simply say that I bought a red belly pacu at petsmart in orlando. and stick to the story.
PETSMART A CONTRIDICTION IN TERM'S...LOL.THAT'S A GOOD 1 BLAME IT ON PET NOT VERY SMART:ROFL:

THERE IS A BAN FOR A REASON..not all people realize what could happen if a non native spiecies is relised into an ecco system that can't handle it.the implications could be devistating or they simply don't care.

As long as they are in demand, this wont stop..

Just like Drugs.. Its illegal, but they are still out there..

The F&G officer should raid some of the lfs here.. so much illegal :O

I wish him well, the part that gets me is all the bull about pirahna. I like my Monster fish, but the pirahna rep far exceeds the fish itself. IMHO

Then you've never delt with a natural school of piranha. Keeping them by themselves or in small groups in sterile tank environments dumbs them down (so to speak). A large group of adults (not the whimpy little 6" ones) in a wild setting - and they are a force not to be messed with.

my friend's dog was ripped to shreds by a school of rbp. It jumped in the water after a capibara, and started howling. By the time they got it back in the boat, it's legs were reduced to bone, and they had carved out most of his abdomen. Very sad :(
