Well,yesterday evening we lowered the tank to the floor and it is now sitting on two by fours spaced apart.I got me a nice new utility knife which I will use to go to work on the old silicone this afternoon.

If it is a retractable blade "box-knife" it won't do you much good. You need a blade that you can keep flat against the glass.
This is what you need:
For the corners (which are by far the trickiest spots) I use just the blade, as the holder can get in the way. With a 265G 7' tank, be prepared for some sore fingers by the time you finish!
Ha ha and sliced!..I did a little of the top to try out the knife and I cut my pinky...Those are some nice looking blades but my knife has a rather thin and flexible blade and it worked pretty good.
If it works it works, but I have a feeling you may be going to the hardware store before it is fully stripped.
The blades and holders I showed can be picked up in the paint department of any hardware/home-improvement store. I will go through several blades stripping one tank. You don't really notice them dulling, but when you grab a fresh blade it feels like slicing butter at first.
I did have plans to stop by HD later so I guess I might as well pick one up...I got mine from the dollar store after all so you might be right about needing another lol.
And it sounds like you need to pick up some cut proof gloves while your at it.
Serious. You can get them at Bass Pro for fileting fish. Not completely cut proof, but will catch most slips.
I used this recently to do the corners in my new 90 and old 75. It might not work well for everyone and it will cut you if you don't know how to handle a blade. It worked well for me though.
