My Tigrinus thread

If the tig is taking bloodworm, it should be ready to take any nonlive feed, not necessarily pellets but them too. If it is is stubborn a bit, like you said, presoak new feed, including pellets, in the bloodworm juices.

I've never had to undertake any special effort to get my tigs to start taking cut thawed fish. I feed saltwater bait fish, cut to appropriate sizes. I am in the camp that's doesn't believe salt is the problem but of the mind that there is no need to offer tigs any crustaceans with the variety of other feed available.

Many of my tigs started taking pellets on their own too. I merely throw pellets and cut fish for everyone in a tank. Some actually would only take pellet and not fish, some only fish, and the rest takes both. No specific training or work I have done for that.

Thanks for the advice, yea I think I’m going to try and cut the basa fillet up really small and see if he takes it then, he has chomped on mass ivory a couple of times but spits it out! I’m planning on getting a bit more size on him so I can start hiding it in the food unless he starts eating them on his own accord.

Oh ok, you think crustatians are a problem rather than salt content?

I know I’m probably being over cautious but I’ve wanted one of these for so long! Lol

Pangasius filet is as good as tilapia and as any filet is utterly incomplete in the nutritional package department. Still it will take some time for a particular nutrient deficiency to turn into a disorder.

If it mouthed the massivore, chances are it is very close to taking it. It is usually the most promising sign.

Yes, I am in the camp that blames crustaceans, or perhaps thiaminase or some kind of allergic reactions in particular. Even though obviously the whole body of evidence doesn't support this entirely but I tend to think that a balanced feeding where crustaceans take up a small part could be fine. Still I prefer to eliminate this risk altogether.

Yea I agree about the fish fillet not being a complete diet I just though the extra protein would help him along a little bit, I always vary my fish’s food as much as possible and try feeding them in different ways as that’s part of the fun for me lol

I never knew about thiaminase or crustatians being a problem, I used to feed my catfish a lot of market shrimp! I’ll have to look for some threads about it.

Thanks for all of your help so far

We are not talking about any other catfish but tigs here. To clarify.

What I did ... was got them eating live bloodworm in little clumps by hand feeding with tongs. Then I moved to tong feeding shrimp and cut pieces of fish. Then I began wrapping a pellet in live bloodworms or a piece of freshwater shrimp or fish and tong feeding that. Eventually I got them to eat ok mostly. My big one however was stubborn and never in his life did he eat a pellet without “help”. Mind you he ended up hand fed his entire life ;) as he grew he became kind of an obsession and eventually ended up growing huge (for a tig). I too believe the feeding of commercially available saltwater shrimps to catfish is a possible issue and I used to buy freshwater shrimps only which was quite horrendou$$$$$ ...

Yea he’s eating everything except the fish fillets and pellets so far but now he’s eating well I’m not as worried :) awesome! I don’t suppose you have any pictures of your tig? Do you know how big it actually was? Was it in your tank/lake with the rtc’s? Lol sorry for all of the questions I just think the level you took this hobby to is inspiring.

1 quick question for any of you that have kept this, does the bottom streamer grow in when they get bigger or do some just not get 1? He’s got bit of a point at the bottom but doesn’t appear to be growing?
