API IS A GOOD KIT(about $25) ,, if you are using "strips" (some other brand) that could be the issue...if you really do have that much AMMONIA in your tap ,seems like that is likely the major issue with the new tank..hopefully it is a mis-read ,,,get it checked and good luck with that weather ,I saw it on the news ,(yuck),,Ok this test kit is all over the place I test from my sink just now again and it's way lower about .5 I am taking a sample from my sink and my tank to my lfs as soon as possible but we are having crazy bad weather in South Carolina right now. I know the guy advised against buying a API test kit but the only one they sold at his shop was a custom one they make for like $120 and I am not doing that haha

this is good ...take a sample from your tap AND new tank...tell the lfs guy what's up,,,you will get it figured out (if not there then here)Thanks yea I have been stuck in doors for the past 2 days I'm going a bit stir crazy haha. I think that picture from my first test in the tap was a mis read or something hopefully fingers crossed but I think it was since my 45gallon tanks fish have always been fine and my local fish store said last time I had the water checked by them it was perfect

does stress coat treat chloramines? I don't use it so I don't know if it does. that is where the ammonia in your tap is coming from.
