it will pay off with happy fish,,:)

after going back in the thread to check , sure enough you have API KIT ...I'll bet it is chloramines in the water that give you that reading(we don't have them in Phoenix....)

So if it is chloramines what does that mean I am getting a false positive from my tap water? Could that explain why my tanks ammonia is so high also and never changes I do fill the evaporated water up about every other day so it's easier to sleep because of noise.

that is most likely the case ...false + from chloromines in both ...but the tank water false positive might be short lived (especially after cycle) usually chlorine (not sure about chloramines) gases off as it sits

Hopefully I can get to the locks fish store and see what they have to say soon I am going to cut up one if my filter pads or whatever to get some bb from my established tank tomorrow hopefully that helps. Should I add quick start also?

if you have it ,it can't hurt :)

So did we put tap water in the tank, then treat it with something that removes chlorine and chloramine? And then test ammonia after that? As for chloramines, I have it in my tap water, and I've never seen an ammonia reading that high. I use API test kit--liquid drops in the tube. That seems pretty dark green to me.

try letting the water from your tap run for a little, thats what i have to do for my water changes. and the api test is cheap on http://www.petmountain.com/product/aquarium-freshwater-test-kits/11442-107520/api-freshwater-master-test-kit.html?utm_source=googleproductads&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term={keyword}&gclid=CJ7F4qbmybwCFa9FMgodZwkAfg //// sorry haha just trying to helpout.
