New Addition

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If red wigglers are going to be his food of choice then that is going to make things a lot easier. Lol. They will just stay alive in the tank until eaten. They will also help him get on his way to bulking up pretty quickly.

I went ahead and cleaned out all of the food from the tank and did about a 20% water change.

Will keep you guys posted.

Another update:

I gave him a total of four red wigglers last night. I saw him eat the first one and then another one was gone when I checked on him before bed. When I checked this morning the remaining two were also gone. So he ate all four of them. Round two will come later tonight!

Do you have a worm bin?

Nope. I actually just buy containers of them at my local Petsmart. They are only about $5 per container and that lasts a few weeks. I don't really care to setup my own breeding bin so buying them and keeping the small container in the refrigerator works well for me.

I dig up earthworms out of my yard for my bichirs, but have contemplated doing a worm bin for wigglers since we compost food anyway... I didn't know Petsmart sells them! Cool.

I will probably just keep up the variety of stuff I have been doing. From everything I've heard, they can be extremely picky eaters for their entire life. I already have my bigger ones eating frozen shrimp, frozen krill, frozen bloodworms, occasionally live red wigglers, and they even pick a little at the frozen beef heart. I will probably introduce night crawlers at some point, but that's most likely going to be about it. I'm hoping that this new little guy will get into all of that but I think that even if he just eats half of that stuff, he will be in pretty good shape. I doubt they will ever take pellets, but if they do start at some point, because I feed pellets to some of my other fish, I will work those in too. Lol. It is amazing how much the bigger guys eat right now.

I think the hardest part is just getting them eating in the first place. As I'm finding out with this new guy, it can be difficult to get them eating anything at all. Once they are eating though, it more becomes a matter of giving them enough of what they want to eat, and then trying to find new things that they will take for a variety.

Update: I fed him four more red wigglers tonight. He immediately snatched three of them, but then I saw the fourth catch on the intake of the internal filter, and wiggle himself in before I had a chance to grab him. I didn't want to leave him in there so I reached in and took the media part off of the filter, took it apart inside the tank (it was just cleaned yesterday) and dug the fourth worm out. All of this stressed my new eel out and he let two of the previously eaten worms crawl right back out of his mouth. However, he is still one up for the night so far and is looking much better. His color is getting better and his stomach has some substance to it now.

I'm going to do a 50% water change and leave the three red wigglers in the tank for him to hopefully find overnight.
