New Addition

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well, he ate another red wiggler while I was doing the water change. I'm pretty excited that he's eating now. :)

He still has a long way to go to catch up to the other guys though. I'm optimistic about it though.

So happy he's eating! Also good to hear that your large ones take so much frozen food. I feed frozen anyway to my bichirs but if they are shy feeders I worry about having one and assuring it gets enough. Maybe growing one out in a smaller tank first is the way to go. The bichirs aren't fast eaters though, because they're pretty much blind, but still... This gives me a glimmer of possibility some day down the line. What size tank are your larger ones in?

I have sponges over my filter intake on my shrimp tank to prevent baby shrimp from being sucked up in there. A cheap and easy solution if they keep getting sucked up into the filter. Or I bet you could just rubber band on a thin piece of filter floss...

Many find it difficult to break these guys off earthworms

I wouldn't be too upset if that's all he ever eats. I would like to see him eat a variety if I can though. Once he is in the larger tank with the other two I'm hoping he will follow their lead into some different foods. For now though, I'll stick with using the red wigglers to try and get him fattened up.

The little guy is continuing to recover. He grabbed one of the four red wigglers right away tonight. I then tested the water and I had .5ppm ammonia, 0 nitrite, and 5ppm nitrate. I think the cycle is working, just not able to fully keep up yet. I went ahead and did a fin level water change (95-100%) and left three red wigglers in with him for the night.

Updates on the little one?

Hey, sorry for not putting an update up until now. The little guy is doing great. I've been giving him close to 100% water changes every other day for the last week. I have also dosed the tank with Prime every evening, just to be on the safe side. He has been eating four red wigglers a day. He doesn't always scarf them down, but they are usually gone overnight, if not then they are gone by the time I get home from work the next day. He is starting to get his shape back, but he still has a long way to go to be fattened up like my other two are. Here is the best picture I could get of him. He doesn't like to sit still unless he's in his pvc tube.

I've started feeding him a bit more. I am doing four red wigglers in the morning and four at night. He aggressively eats them all as soon as they are put into the tank now. If he keeps this up then I don't see why he wouldn't be able to go back to the 220 in the next couple months.

This guy continues to get healthier and healthier. He comes out to the front of the tank every time I walk in the room to beg for food. Most of the red wigglers don't even get a chance to get to the bottom before he gobbles them up. Still feeding four in the morning and four at night. I think that's a pretty good amount for him at this point.
