New Armatus home. Sneak peak......

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sponges in the overflows (for the big stuff) and socks on the way down to the sump sounds fairly effective.

My problem is I'de rather get rid of as much solids as possible without the use of any media...... I've been eyeballing the idea of a vortex chamber like used in Koi ponds. That way you just flip a valve in the bottom of the chamber and all your solids go right down the drain rather than getting stuck in the media. It seems to me that if these things truly work as designed it would be rather silly cleaning media when you don't have to.

Has anyone incorporated one of these vortex chambers into thier monster tanks?

OR is this just a poor idea since the overflows are at the water's surface and therefore never even see any heavy solids? In other words the vortex chambers only work if you're pulling water off (or through) the bottom?

Vortex can work but need to be installed on water level, but can work. You would still need a sleeve or filter socks to get rid of fine stuff imo.

Only read about vortex chamber in the koi book ^^ was gonna install for my aquapond but it was built without my consulatation (well at least i was not charged for it)

The sad part is thinking of the evolution of a true MFKer. Everytime you take it to the next level your current tank becomes a sump.......... Pretty sad to think that this may be a sump someday.

I assure you the day will come (sooner than you think) :naughty:

I keep telling myself that one more upgrade only (into a true pond) ...

Agree 100%. In my opinion I'de still want at least 2 if not 3 grades of floss/socks (course, medium, fine)

Just thought the chamber would aid in getting the bigger stuff cutting down on mech. media cleaning.

But I see what you're saying, difficult to incorporate on a tank......

At least I have almost a year to plan........ IF I can hold out that long.

Thats a huge tank man! Nice score, so cant wait to see this thing with fish in it!

As far as what I gave for it...... By the time it's up and running all said and done I'm guessing it will be around $3K. The guy I bought it from said he paid over $10K for the tank....... Don't know if there's any truth to that or not I have never priced anything like this.

wow only 3k after everything. Wow I find that incredibly cheap. Great pick-up.

You're not the only one. LOL

Hopefully all my livestock lasts that long...... I had to sell almost all the tanks I had to come up with the cash for this. Now I'm having to sell off livestock to get the think useable.

I do garentee it will be a looker though..... Lotsa teeth swimming above marbles.

I've never had a monster tank. So I'm completely lost on filtration. My only experience in monster filtration is my pond. And that left MUCH to be desired. So I'm open to ANY suggestions whatsoever.
