I didn't get worked up at all. lol This is pretty minor stuff compared to what has taken place on MFK in the past.


I think the real lesson learned is one that has been repeated many times on MFK over the years. If one has an issue with a vendor or manufacturer, before coming to a public forum and making inflammatory type accusations, such as a company or product line is going downhill, or they are now using a cheaper vendor/manufacturer, or they sent me the wrong fish, or the wrong size, etc, one is typically better served taking their issue up directly with the other party involved. Sheet happens.

Hopefully this was just a hiccup and the replacement food will work better for you. If not I'm sure that everyone will hear about it. :)

These are the current formulas that I am using, plus a small jar of 1mm cichlid formula that I recently purchased. They all sink, pretty much as soon as I drop them in the tank. Perhaps in the past they sank even faster, and I just never noticed? I have no idea, my fish pound the food pretty hard, but most are not surface feeders so the majority of the pellets need to sink in order for the fish to eat. If they didn't, I'd be switching brands too.

I also understand the OP's frustration, but I think that he would have been better served contacting the manufacturer directly, versus running to an online forum crying foul, and stating things like they seem to be going downhill, and implying that they are using a cheaper vendor/manufacturer now. Especially when they are one of the few fish food manufacturers that actually make their own food on site, using their own equipment.

Holy mackerel that's a lot of food -- just out of curiosity how long will it take you to go through that much (and for about how many tanks)?
 
We can agree that going to the vendor/business directly is a good idea (I did that), however, I disagree that you should not share your experiences with products/vendors on this site. After all, if I hadn't shared my experience with the change in formula here, I wouldn't have had the pleasure of this exchange with you.

Going to the business exclusively will often only get you canned/generic responses to very simple questions. Responses that come straight from the marketing department.

For example, below is the NLS reps response to my directly asking the following yes or no question, "are the new pellets more buoyant than the previous formula?"

"We are constantly working on a refine balance between buoyancy and proper density for fish palatability and we believe our batch have indeed improved."
Clear as mud, eh?

After some resistance and BSing, you tested it yourself and the results were in line what I had been saying from the start; a large percentage of the pellets float, even when dropped from 6" to 8". I think there are some lessons to be learned there as well.

So I would say a combination of working with the vendor and sharing experiences with the community of customers that actually use the product is the best way to go.

I have no issue with anyone bringing issues out in the open, including on public forums, I'm all about transparency, but that's not usually a good place to start. "Hey man, you're company is going downhill & your products suck, and the fish you sent are smaller than you advertised and now that I got that off my chest out in the public, can I get a refund?" "Oh yeah, and I'm already buying from someone else because you suck."

Not all vendors will be so open to discussion after the gloves have already come off.

I recall someone once bashing a well known fish vendor on this site because they didn't respond to their enquiry fast enough. (3 or 4 hours as I recall) The reality is they never even gave the vendor a chance. In the end the person that started the thread got schooled by several members.

As I said sheet happens sometimes, and one shouldn't always be so quick to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

I hope this all works out for you, I honestly do. And you're right, I learned a lesson here myself. If the new pellets being sent don't work out for you, feel free to send them my way. :)

The thing about that is that I don't need your permission to post about a change in my experience with a product that I've been using for the past decade.

You're right, a business probably wouldn't be interested in hearing why customers are leaving them- lol. Businesses pay lots of money for this info.

It's ironic for you to say this. Any business worth a damn is going to welcome feedback (honest criticism) from their long time customers, especially after they've made changes to their products. If they aren't going to listen to feedback, and are willing to lose customers because they are too sensitive to hear about the shortcomings of their products, then they probably won't be around for very long.

If you're too sensitive to hear criticism, I'll return the tissue you offered to me earlier so that you can cry into it.

I'm beginning to think that you are Pablo Tepoot. That's the only thing I can think of to explain your strange obsession with defending NLS like you do.

Cool story. You should really try practicing what you preach because it reminds me of someone who prematurely called BS on someone, then took the time to test out the person's claims for herself, then had to eat crow and admit she was wrong (see post #31 in case you forgot).

I'm not standing here pointing a finger at you the entire time that I am typing, Alex, I was simply giving an example, in a general manner. I did that just to make certain that you didn't think that I was referring to you, specifically, in that example. Whoa ...

Me thinks that you are reading a bit more into things than what's actually there.

And no, you don't need my permission, nor do I need yours to point out your shortcomings, or anyone's for that matter. Do you remember who invited who to this party? Remember how this all started - you specifically called me out, and asked for my input.

As I said Alex, I hope this works out for you. But if it doesn't, I won't be shedding any tears, and neither will the millions of other happy customers who will carry on without noticing much if any difference.

Hi. This is Ian Tepoot from New Life Spectrum. I had noticed some concerns regarding buoyancy of our various generation products, new labeling, and customer satisfaction approach and wanted to chime in just to provide some clarification.

1. The labels on our newest generation foods have changed from labeled as "sinking" to listing the Buoyancy accompanied with the more precise description "High Density: Most Pellets Will Sink". We want to be clear that this isn't a response to a change in our pellet buoyancy.

For our new generation product, we decided it would be better to have a spec that provided greater clarity for users on what to expect with an organic product (and thus subject to natural variation from pellet to pellet) meant for aquariums -- each of which is a specific microcosm environment.

Our target is that our negative buoyancy pellets will majority sink under typical/common aquarium conditions. When we launched in 1996 this was the case, and it is the case now. In tanks with a moving water column and surface movement, this should be enough to overcome surface tension for most of the pellets.

As a side note: you may also notice that we did similar increased precision with our sizes, noting the specific size ranges you could expect from each class of pellet. We think these are improvements to our labeling.

2. We understand skepticism in general when companies claim to be improving -- such as with 'new pellet forming techniques'. We think it's healthy. And while true we aren't going to go to be publishing a how-to guide for creating our new pellets ;) there are a few items we can clarify:

- One of the improvements is less starch in favor of seaweed-based binders (which are more effective and nutritious). This is a big factor in the new technique because it creates a more water-stable pellet and expands less when it cools, making it closer to the 1mm hole it came out of. The combination of smaller surface area with existing density in our tests actually made them sink better than previous versions. However, again, different aquarium systems may cause any individual user's experience to be different.

- Naturox preserved proteins are more costly and premium. The Krill we used is actually without preservatives, and sourced using new techniques the don't use trawlers so they are fresher.

- We added a whole new protein to the mix: Squid

Together, these changes are the opposite of cutting corners.

As a side note: Our announcement and Q&A videos didn't go into depth regarding the specifics of our pellet forming techniques in the interest of length and general interest. However, for more serious hobbyists looking for more in-depth information, Hilary also now does an NLS livestream Mondays at 10:30 am EST on our YouTube channel where she answers your questions -- and I often monitor and can drop in if there's anything she can't answer.

3. Another factor that can affect any given pellet from sinking is dryness. All of our pellets are dried to between 5% and 9% moisture content. The more dry the surface, the more the film of water surface tension will repel and thus not immediately sink. Small variations can affect this: as mentioned, organic variance in natural products means pellets in which 100% of pellets sink 100% of the time when dropped in dry is not, nor has ever been, possible.

However, water with some surface movement definitely helps, and is the typical case. In our systems, it has never been an issue. If 'spiking' the food into the water to break the surface tension isn't for you, nor is swirling the pellets in water drawn for the aquarium and a auto-feeder is a requirement, a feeding ring under the outlet (store-bought or hand-crafted from a bit of air line tubing) can hold food in place until it moistens enough to sink. One surface tension is broken, the pellet density will take the pellets to the bottom.

4. I notice that many of the concerns expressed were re: Naturox Series, as was the reference to the new labeling. However, the product cited in this thread was part of our previous generation foods. Although we receive very few complaints of non-sinking foods in general, we work to improve the non-Float formula's negative buoyancy year over year, and have received positive feedback regarding Naturox in this regard. As we reduce wheat, seaweed-based binders are less dense -- which we have compensated with increased Omega-3 oil and other ingredients.

5. We were unhappy to hear that Alex had a negative experience, and we did offer from his first communication to replace the food sight unseen with our new series (with a request for a return so we could examine it for QA). I understand that he has moved on to a different brand, which if he feels it suits his needs better we totally understand.

Thanks for taking the time to post to the thread. I appreciate the additional information.
However, my experience, as well as RD's experiment contradicts what you have said about there not being a change to the buoyancy of the pellets.
The pellets are absolutely more buoyant, with ~50% floating, as RD even stated, many for several minutes.

As you can see in the video I posted (which was filmed 5 years ago, using the older formula), I have a feeding ring and the NLS pellets I'm feeding sink. The new pellets do not. They are unequivocally more buoyant. My fish thrash at the surface when they feed, completely breaking any surface tension, often pulling the pellets underwater as they swim away from the surface, but the new pellets inevitably end up floating back up, outside of the feeding ring and ultimately down my overflows.

I absolutely loved your product. I bought in to the higher quality ingredients and I did not mind paying premium for a high quality food. But the buoyancy issue is something that doesn't work for me. I need sinking pellets.
If you are saying that the two buckets I received and the pellets that RD tested are bad batches, I will take your word for it, and perhaps buy a smaller container to test that theory.

I did not end up taking Raquel up on her offer to exchange my two buckets for new ones because based on her responses, I wasn't convinced that there would be any difference in the buoyancy and I therefore didn't want to waste my time or hers (even though she generously offered to cover the costs of shipping). Like I said, I will buy a smaller container and test it out myself.
