New Shark Pool

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A lot of those 'store bought' products designed to speed up the process give a 'false cycle', so it looks like the tank is ready based on reading as the ammonia/nitrate/nitrite goes up and down. The downside is that when you add animals, it will re-cycle itself with the animals in the display.
Letting it cycle slowly and naturally with a few hardy animals will give a much more stable system to introduce sharks into. Sharks and young systems don't get along too well. So the more stable you can make it, the better.

Ok that makes sense. What about live rock and sand from my other tanks? And mature filter material? That any better, to seed the new stuff?

What does everyone think about a bonnethead in his this pool. A pup.
Give me some feedback please.

Yes, sand/rock from an established tank will work. Old filter media as well.

This is a bit too small of a pool, even for a pup. I usually suggest something around 21' for a young bonnet set up. They need a lot of swimming room, and like to cruise the edges of the tank. If you give them a tight circle to swim, it leads to other issues later on down the line. I've seen it with bonnets, black tips and even sharks like sandtigers.

I've been doing a LOT of research about keeping bonnetheads - because I too want(ed) to add some to the big tank I'm planning. Unfortunately, they seem to be a handful even on the public aquarium scale. They tend to circle the outside edges, and scrape up their eyes, leading to all sorts of issues. And they're very sensitive to shipping, according to a number of sources - very high fatality rate.

I was mainly interested in them because they are going to be available to me for a very good price. But i think ill stick with the smoothhound pups.
Even though a Bonnethead would be awesome, I too have heard they are very sensitive, especially in smaller systems.
As far as the transporting goes, I know the people and the method being used, so that far i can trust.

So lets take a poll.

WHAT SHARKS/RAYS WOULD YOU PUT IN THIS POOL IF IT WAS YOURS?

inspire me with an odd combination or something i wouldnt have thought of.

How far would the bonnetheads be traveling? And would you be planning a bigger tank down the line?
