New to Polypterus - Substrate Advice!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have the same problem, I don't like the look of red, I have blue mixed in my substrate from when I was into cichlids, but it's mainly black, I'd say mix in red with whatever you want, I'd do it if I could do it over again to give it a try. I for one don't think substrate color will change activity, I think that's is a specimen thing, my weeksii and sen never stop swimming up and down and side to side, my delhezi swims all over the place at feeding time, the rest stay at the bottom, my ornate has just come out of hiding and has been out for two weeks straight, don't know what caused that, maybe she's finally comfortable even though I've had her over a year. I like the look of my wolf over the black and that's my main focus, and it also brings out the colors in my odoe pike, and makes my sun cat's yellow pop. I'm satisfied with my UJ colors. But I feel my laps can do better, I'm satisfied with my male, but my female is sometimes very drab, i thought about getting rid of her to reduce some bio load and because I don't like having more than one of a species, but I don't want the male to get anal cupping I believe it's called, so I still have her.

+1 on Caribesea natural products is a good natural choice would be 2nd/3rd selection after red. Believe this color medly is aesthetically the best natural look for the tank. I mixed my red gravel into my caribesea Floramax (plant type clay mix.same colors as the sand).

Im kind of in the same boat. Just can do the red thing lol. I think you have to decide on whats visually appealing to the eye and find a happy medium. That being said may try the red garnet eventually.

So far ive tried pfs (makes the lower jaws looms drab) black (i like what the upper jaws look like on it) and now currently using red flint sand, its kind of maroon/brown looks nice overall but doesnt do much in terms of the pokys markings. I think the peace river sand that dmd is using is a happy medium

Peace river is different in that its not super fine like sand but more like really coarse sand or really fine gravel if that makes sense. It does not have that super heavy body to it but does not stir up easily. I do wish it were just a little darker or had a bit more darker colored pieces in it.

Yeah I kinda like the look of the grain texture, definitely different. But I agree, I would like a little more darker pieces. As of now I think i'm gonna be going with the peace river and maybe mixing in some black, but we'll see.

While I may not have the fancier polys the black realy broght out the sens. Can see subtleties in thier scales I could not before Like that lil birthmark looking spot on the one in the last pic.

That gold dust looks great on the black gravel. Nice and golden!

Ive been thinking to try this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005TNF74...=UTF8&colid=J2DBGUMR5DGZ&coliid=ILOPGNEUJO5YR

Seems to be a bit bigger sized and supposed to be a natural product from what Ive read. I could see adding this to the peace river.
