New to Polypterus - Substrate Advice!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have Amazon Prime so free shipping. Way overpriced on the sand, basically $1.25 a pound. I hope to add just one bag and mix it in for a little darkening.

I chose this stuff due to the fact they say it is natural. So I understand that to be a non coated, colored product. Hope that is what it really is...

Im really digging the look of that peace river sand. I have pool filter sand right now because i couldn't find anything else at the time.. Dont mind it but the ornate and teg could look better.. What is the best way to remove the sand already in the aquarium?

When i removed mine i lower the water to 50% and use a small clean dustpan to scoop the sand.

When my old tank leaked I pulled all the fish out into another tank, or a bin, and used a wet dry vacc... Worked really well but had I not drained the tank first it wouldn't have worked lol

I've done this many times with the fish still inside the tank. Results have been good and pretty simple to do. Not much cloudiness afterwards. Just a suggestion:
* Rinse ALL the new sand/gravel thoroughly before you start. I use a couple buckets.
* Turn off your filtration. It can get clogged.
* Leave water level the same.
* Use a clean plastic dust pan. Just scoop it sand or gravel out into a bucket one at a time.
* Take off the both ends including the cylinder of your python gravel vac, and just use straight tubes. It vacuums out the remaining gravel/sand pretty easily without any clogs. Have the drain go into a tub outside, so mess is easier to clean up afterwards.
* Scoop the new sand into the tank with a pitcher. I submerge the pitcher halfway or close to the bottom to one side first, then the other.
* Turn you filters back on. Should be clear within 24-48 hours.
* Good luck!

Zilch Zilch that looks great! Just checked out their products on the website, is that the teak or the camel?
