New to site and want to get first tank

Mollies are not a good bet for such a small aquarium as they grow large, prefer brackish water, and are not as hardy as other smaller livebearers. The suggestions above are all acceptable aside from a displaced comic who recommended an arapaima to you. They are awsome fish so I recommend you find a picture of one for a glance ( ;

I would try a couple of dwarf gouramis, some small tetras, or fancy guppies all of these stay a smaller size and they all are colorful. Good luck starting this hobby just beware its addicting.

I'd put a Betta in there. See how long you can keep it. And then replace it with some Guppies when it dies. Don't mix the two by the way.

Male Bettas attack two things. Other Bettas and Guppies.

for a 5 gallon, maybe 3-4 guppies or maybe a betta.

Perhaps a 3 way split (with plant cover in each segment as well) for 3 Betas.
just a thought.

... white clouds...they are a small, relatively easy to breed fish. Stay small, are colorful, hardy, and readily available. OR you could try zebra danios. They are small, lively, pretty, HARDY .... Peanut

See I forgot about these, also good choices.

Hey Beth, were you planning on breeding? This is a good point. Guppies could get over populated quick in a 5g.

so I can put a male and female betta together and with other non aggressive fish other than guppies?

aside from having the 5 gallon, what filter do you hae available or what are you planning on using as filter? best to start out is with those fancy guppies, or you could go to your vector control and ask for mosquito fish. they do not need a heater, and filter. just add plants that does not require too much light, like anachris, or hornswort. keep us posted :) welcome to MFK :thumbsup:

I wouldn't put two bettas in that small of a tank. They can beat up each other still even though they are male and female especially if the male wants to breed. If you have a bigger tank and lots of hiding places then it is possible to put them together.

especially when first starting out the bigger the better, as the smaller the tank, the harder to control and maintain the water parameters.
my opinion a 20 or 29 gallon is a decent place to start if you wanna keep the budget down.
just read up on anything and everything you can, don't be afraid to ask questions, or look stupid, we've all been there.
good luck and happy fishing

My mom got a new filter a couple of years ago that has never been used or taken out of the box, it is a whisper power filter.You can use some kind of filter carbon in it also. It sounds good so that is what I am going to use. I am hoping to go fish shopping this week sometime. Is it ture that you have to use clorine remover and let the water sit for a couple of days or am I going to be lucky and not have to let it cycle or sit for days.
