My folks are happy to get a larger tank if I it comes to that. However it would need to be about 2 years down the road. Do you think the flowerhorn would have any stunting or hunchback issues in the mean time?

Your fish will not be stunted by your tank size ime. More often stunting is a product of poor water quality.

30-50% water changes weekly will be a good routine to stick to. However, If you are feeding heavier, dont be afraid to double up on changing water as well.

On that note, be sure to feed a varied, healthy diet for your flowerhorn. Include vegetable based pellets as well as high protein foods.

I’m going to steer you out of the direction of Jack Dempsey’s, some might be outgoing sure, but all the ones I have had were all out going when little and schooling together but as adults they are slumbersom, and flighty, quick movements scare mine half to death, one almost flighted out of the tank. I have owned regular, EBJDs, and gold.

In regards to the flower horn I think you would be good with that tank size and I don’t think you’d be disappointed with one as a single wet pet. I have never owned one personally but every time I am at the lfs I see them up front and centre following people as they walk past their tanks. I don’t even like Flowerhorns but was tempted to buy one last time I was there bc he was so intrigued with me, however his $200 price tag and his need to be an only fish mentality was deterrent enough for me. But if that’s the kind of fish you are looking for it would be a great fit I think!!! (I might even kind of like them now)

Thanks for the input guys. I have ruled out the jack dempseys. My folks have said that they'd be happy to get a larger tank if the fish grows into the 10inch range. So using the 50gal as a grow out tank should work. I can either upgrade the tank in my bedroom to a 65gal (48x18x18inches, thats the max in my room after removing a bookshelf haha). Alternatively they'll let me move it to the garage or rumpus if a larger tank(75 or 80 maybe) is needed.

I'll go with a normal flowerhorn and tank upgrades if I cannot find a short body.
I also really like the look of the Sajica (T bar cichlid) which seems to stay really small. Does anyone have any experience/advice on this fishes "wet pet" status?

Of all the ones on your list I'd have to say the Polleni would be the best as far as a wet pet personality. I've kept all those you listed at one time or another. I've had 3 Polleni and all have been very outgoing. The green Texas, jd and salvini I've had have all been very shy and like to hide. Although I have to say the EBJD I have now is very personable and will always greet me at the front of the tank. I've kept several severum and they are hit and miss. The Sev I have now is very shy. A 3 foot tank may be a bit tight though. 4 ft or longer tank would work better for an adult Polleni.
I completely missed this reply haha.I really like the way the Polleni looks. Assuming I have to go through the grow out and then upgrade route for either a flowerhorn or Polleni. Would you recommend the Polleni over a Flowerhorn in terms of personality?
There is a lot of info about Flowerhorns as wet pets but not a whole lot on the Polleni.

Oh and I'll probably stay away from Oscars. I see them around a lot and I'm kind of bored with them.
