You my friend are so late to the party. There's already been a 50+ page debate and you haven't said anything we haven't already heard

The census is tipping should not be expected and your boss should pay accordingly , not pass the buck to their customers. Only whiners wanting to keep with an outdated tradition argue for things to stay the way they've always been

We're also aware you can't be paid below minimum wage. You can claim and get paid if you fall short.
but the truth is YOU CAN be paid less than minimum wage if you job title is expected to be tipped , but that's here in old BACKWOODS ARIZONA (HOME of the lowest common denominator.. warm bev flavored politics).. and YES ,I am late to the party didn't care much about the debate until one of the posts looked like some of my notoriously cheap customers sounded... and the opinion of MFK .. HARDLY REFLECTS the economic reality of people forced to serve mean spirited, angry people ,who are looking for an excuse to be cheap..ALL I can say in conclusion is if you don't like tipping ....mickie D'S IS OVER YONDER . :) rant over ...LEE OUT

you & sumo don't exactly constitute a vote of the masses., but it is always funny.

the fact that service people get paid less per hour on the assumption they are going to get tips? the ONLY EXCEPTIONS to minimum wage laws in this country are for service(tip) jobs...and don't get me started on the greed it takes (by business owners, but of course not all) that make minimum wage laws necessary,,, and not to be rude but you obviously haven't spent DECADES(like some of us)having to deal with mad customers.. nothing personal ... just stating reality in the service world:) just some perspective...my last job,one of many, was 10 YRS, MINIMUM WAGE +TIPS...JUST like every other job I HELD FOR 30 YRS...not looking for "sympathy ".... a living wage would do.... one other thing if you don't like tipping.... it would be entirely appropriate for you NOT to frequent places that tipping is expected... to expect good service when you are known as a bad tipper would be a little naive.. once again nothing personal but why would someone spend time busting hump for a non-tipper when the guy at the next table tips well? and you need to try and pay rent on $3 an hour +tips,,, just reality

servers in the food industry are among the most self-entitled people in the world. I'll try to make this brief because I hate beating the dead horse. there are laws (in the US) that employees can pay under min wage for tipped jobs. BUT, the law also states that if an employee doesn't make their state's min wage AFTER tips, it is the employer that MUST pay the difference so that the employee DOES make at least min wage. and yes, those laws apply to your old backwoods Arizona too. there's sources showing the laws in the links provided in the thread I linked below if you wanna look.

so,..........knowing that EVERYONE, tipped or not tipped, must make at least the federal or their state's min wage, my question to you is, why do only tipped employees (especially servers in the food industry and bartenders who are the worse when it comes to feeling self-entitled) deserve tips and not the guy flipping burgers or the guy mopping floors or the janitor cleaning the public toilets who are also making min wage? they work just as hard if not harder and only make min wage. yet they provide a service to you and I.

and don't give me the "go eat at burger king if you don't like tipping" bs. that's like the lamest argument. anyone can go anywhere they want if they are paying customers and tipping is a choice. I haven't worked in the food industry for 30 years, but that's because when I felt like I wasn't paid enough, I did what anyone should do instead of complaining, I found a better job. and what ticks me off the most is, servers will intentionally water down alcoholic drinks or intentionally give bad service to people who won't tip them what they think they deserve. now that right there is a scumbag thing to do. you should serve everyone well and do your job well regardless of tip.

anyways i'm done, if you wanna read more on my arguments you can go thru the thread below

Roflmao@forced to serve mean spirited angry people?

Forced Lee? Com'on man! No one is forcing anyone to be a server.

I know, it's so funny what servers will say to back their point

the truth is, way more often than not, they are making good money. they make way over min wage

the simple answer is , because the dude that is flippin burgers doesn't have to deal with the self entitled person who is to cheap to pay the server that is serving him dinner ,,, your not liking it ,doesn't change the fact that MILLIONS of people in this country ,including tipped servers , are trying to raise families on minimum wage,,,, hating on and not tipping servers is only spreading POVERTY... BECAUSE YOU HAVE FOUND A SELF -CENTERED REASON TO HATE THE PERSON LIVING WITHIN THE RULES AND TRYING TO MAKE AN HONEST LIVING AND ENTITLING THE RICH OWNERS TO LEAVE IT THE WAY IT IS... boycott the establishment that has tipped servers,,, don't ask someone to work for you for free , when they don't really have the right to refuse you service,,,,,, if you want it to change ... MAKE THE OWNER CHANGE... AND IF your just cheap ,,,,,mickey D'S IS STILL OVER YONDER,,,bottom line BY NOT TIPPING ,for WHATEVER reason ... the only thing you hurt is your SERVER and your SERVICE:popcorn: AND saying people as a group are self entitled is just plain wrong... people ARE INDIVIDUALS ,,,AND NEED TO BE JUDGED AS INDIVIDUALS ,,,maybe there's an entire RACE OF People you consider entitled ...I m very curious as to where you get this wisdom , I somehow missed in my thirty years of sevice industry work (with cerebral palsy)

I completely disagree

there are tons and tons of jobs where people deal with customers daily. like a department store worker who makes min wage puts up with just as much crap as a server in a restaurant. does that store worker not provide a service and put up with bs customers? does that person not have a family or bills to pay? so why does servers in the food industry only deserve this? that's what i'm asking

and don't assume every one who eats at a restaurant is rich. that may be the janitor just taking his wife out to a nice dinner after a week's hard work

and c'mon, work for free?? no one works for free bro.

and why should I make a change? i'm not hurting, i'm not hurting anyone. I don't need to boycott anything because if you wanna make more money, you should be the one boycotting. if you are in a crappy situation why do I need to do anything for you? and I am not hating on anyone. i'm very thankful of my servers. I appreciate what they do. that doesn't mean i'm required to give you $8-$10 of tip ON TOP OF the already overpriced food

if the server is in a situation that is hurting, then he/she needs to do something about it. I did. I went to school, started at a better paying job, started from the bottom, worked my way up. everyone has that opportunity
