Hello; A lot of assumptions being made here so I will make a few also. Might be the car was left running so the AC would be on for the three kids only one of which was an infant. My assumption is the car was in sight of both parents and why the father was able to react quickly. Might be one of the children is old enough to be trusted not to put the car into gear among other things. Might be the kids in the car was a very safe situation in most respects other than having a criminal decide to step in.
It is fascinating in some respects the conversation has migrated to focus on how bad the parent(s) are. I will keep a focus on the justified end of life for the car jacker/kidnaper. I do get that it is not a smart thing to leave the keys in a car. Nor is it wise to have the car running if you are a distance away. But even so the thief is the one at fault here.
As to what the thief was thinking while being beaten to death, I can not even guess. It would not bother me too much to learn it was sheer terror. I feel fortunate to live in a state where I can actively protect my property and be within the law. I do feel for folks in places where the law expects them to actually retreat while someone steals from their home. I have heard the homeowner is expected to climb out a window to avoid a confrontation. Oh well.
