Interesting read RD. RD. I suspected the advice was....suspect at best but figured I'd ask on here to be sure.

As far as a raw food, i know most feed tilapia from the grocer to their polys occasionally but i seem to recall a thread where you had spoken about not being the biggest fan of tilapia. That being said I can't find that specific thread now. Am i misremembering?

Farmed fish fillet offers mainly two nutrients, amino acids (protein) and fatty acids. And those profiles are not even that great for part of a fishes diet. After that it's all down hill nutrient wise, and that's not even considering the overall health and safety of that tilapia, before it arrives at your local grocer.

I personally do not eat farmed tilapia, and I'll eat damn near anything. :)

It really all boils down to the source of the food. When I was feeding fresh/frozen to a puffer I purchased live mussels at the local grocer, then froze for a few days which kills the vast majority of pathogens/worms, thawed, and fed to fish. Any seafood would serve as a nutritional treat, I'm just not a fan of farmed seafood, especially anything sourced from countries where you know that the conditions are going to often be substandard. China, India, Pakistan, etc.

which makes total sense. thank you. my bichirs are eating pellets very well. My ropefish are a little more finicky. One will only eat blackworm pellets I get from aquaticfoods. the other won't eat anything at all. i've had him for 3 weeks and the only thing i've gotten him to eat were frozen blood worms which i know isn't that nutritious. I've done all the tricks, soaking pellets in stuff, breaking them up into very small pieces, etc. So have been exploring other options

A quick shot of the new guys. Got them in the main tank this weekend

fed my guys tilapia for the first time last night. it was the only thing i could find at my local target. will try some other grocers later.

quite the feeding frenzy. Even the ropefish, who are usually the least eager eaters, got in on the act.
