pacu's go here?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ok. but thats only until they get big enough to where they would be big enough to eat pellets and not eat each other? my point to red devil is that i can get a 125g tank with stand fully outfitted for under a grand, where the tank i was looking at for three pacu's was around 15 thousand dollars. plus, that tank was only 800 gallons, someone on here suggested that for three i would need a tank of 1500 gallons, just imagine the ballpark price on that thing. the reason itd be so expensive is due to that it would have to be acrylic and quite thick acrylic that is. i would not turn down an 800 gallon tank, but i think id get more enjoyment if i had room (and resources) to put in a few more large tanks. i could easily get several 180 gallon tanks for a fraction of the price of a big acrylic tank. thats why im turned on now to the whole piranha thing instead of pacu's. they may cost more to feed off the bat but once i would get to the transition of hikari pellets or something like that it would smooth out.

you could build a large pond with viewing window for the price of the 800.

id still prefer several large tanks over a pond or a giant tank. plus i dont think pacu's would like a minnesota winter.

you could build it inside ?is there space for a green house or small hut ?

i think id still like a tank of piranhas where i have room for several other larger tanks more than just having one pond.

you can feed the raw shrimp their whole life, but if you want to do pellets, you probably won't be able to get them to eat them right away when they are small, so usually people wait till they are about three inches or so, that's usually when they stop eating each other on a regular basis, so it's ok to skip a feeding or two to make the pellets look more appetizing.

you said minnesota winter but your location is illinois, did you move to minnesota?

no but id like to :p i love the dry heat and the unforgiving winters. but thats just how i roll. many thanks to you for your knowledge. i plan on having a tank of piranhas now. any good lfs's in the twin cities?

p.s. that symbol for :p should look happier than it does.....

would they be less aggressive if they were all purchased small? like 1" in length.

they will actually turn on each other alot more when they are smaller, after they hit the 3 inch mark or so, they should pretty much stop eating each other, although it still can happen. i still love getting them when they are dime sized because it's fun to watch them grow, alot of people just anticipate losses and buy a few more than they plan on having in the end.

i have a great lfs up here that i get all of my stuff from, their selection of piranhas is ridiculous, especially for a smaller shop.
