I didn't want to derail Squishy's thread so I started this one.

I posted this in her thread:

Well I couldn't wait till tonight so I went there on my lunch break and got both for $85...still more than I'd like to pay...but you all know how that goes.

Now I'm just curious if I should keep my powerhead turned off for awhile. I hear EBJDs stress easy and with their high mortality rate I want it as comfortable as possible. I didn't have much time to observe them after adding to the tank. I did notice that the one that wasn't hidden from view was trying fairly hard to stay in place, but it didn't seem to have a problem darting forward to peck at a bit of food.. So I left the powerhead off until I can observe them more tonight.

The tank is a 6ft 125g with 2 Emperor 400s for filtration, and the powerhead is a Hydor Koralia #4 (1200 gph). My silver dollars and plecos seem to love the current, but I'm not sure if its too much for a 1" EBJD.

So, are EBJDs strong swimmers? Do they like a fairly strong current? Should I leave the powerhead off until they get a little bigger? Should I rotate keeping it on/off on alternating days?

I'll post pics tonight sometime. I'll also take a video of the EBJDs with the powerhead on so you guys can get a better idea if its too strong or not.

Thanks for any input.
Wow my local petsmart sells ebjd's for 25$ each. I should buy some now lol

I'd definitely give your little Blues some grow out time before asking them to compete with a GT. Plus it is likely the GT will grow faster than the Blues and be incompatible in the long run. Keeping the stress down on your Blues now may make a big difference to your situation in the long run as well ;)

Almost every group of Blues I've raised I raised by themselves, or with Tetras or similar. Once they are sexually mature I've had good fortune keeping them with a variety of tankmates. I just try to ensure that the Blues are the dominant fish.

Caught the tail end of a little dispute....normal cichlid aggression/behavior I'd guess. Let me know if I should be worried :D Have seen it probably a couple times a day, doesn't last long. Video was taken a few minutes after a feeding, not sure if that factored into it or not. They do still swim together occassionally.

Haha, you're such a proud parent...getting every moment on video! I do that too.

Those look like great little eb's...I want to get some of those one day.

haha, thanks :D

I found its much easier to post a video rather than explain whats going on  Plus pics/videos keep people coming back for more!

Yeah...I figured they were just arguing over which one is going to be my favorite :grinyes:

Looks pretty darn normal to me...see it alot with my four 2 inchers.

Just a matter of 'hey dude get out of my area of operation, before I kick your butt' :D.

Hmm, well...I'm slightly concerned, but not because of the minor aggression.

Last night (after lights were out) I noticed one of the EBJDs was kind of wedged between a plastic plant and the glass (in one of the low-flow corners of the tank). For a second I actually thought it was dead (didn't react when I put flashlight on it, and it almost seemed to sway slightly w/ the current, and its position made it hard to get a good look. Naturally, i gave the glass a firm tap tap, which spooked it off. *sigh of relief*, I assumed it was just trying to get some shuteye/rest in a low flow area.

I checked that corner of the tank when I woke up to make sure it wasn't still there, and it wasn't. I didn't have time to observe the tank before work though.

When I got home for lunch I saw the same EBJD sitting in the same corner as the night before, while the other one is actively swimming around/eating like it has been for the past week. Now I'm getting concerned something might be wrong with it.

I added a small dose of salt (1/4 of tanks volume) on either Monday or Tuesday just as a general tonic / stress reducer, also part of the reason for adding salt was to replace what was taken out from Saturday's 50g+ water change.

I can't see any physical change in appearance...no ich/fungus/etc as far as I can tell. Am I just being paranoid? Or is this lethargic behavior cause for concern?

Water temp is ~81. I've tested ammonia/nitrite the last 2 evenings and have been getting 0 readings for both. My nitrates are fairly low (20-30 range I believe). I didn't test them this week, but last weekend after the water change they were at about 20.

Should I do a water change tonight or wait until the regularly scheduled weekend wc? If tonight, what %? (if it matters, its a 125g tank).

Looking back I probably shouldn't have done this (as I dont know what/if anything is wrong), but before I left to go back to work, I dosed Melafix for 3/4 of the tanks volume.

What are you guys' thoughts on the lethargic behavior, sitting at the bottom of the tank in a corner inbetween glass and plant? I took a few pics and a short video of it sitting there, but you can't see much. I'll try to post them tonight...
