picked up 2 1" EBJDs, questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It could be as simple as this fish is the subdominant and is staying out of sight from the dominant…

Young Blue Dempseys are prone to parasitic infection…To reduce/prevent risk of parasites I use UV lights and I highly recommend them to others raising Blue Dempseys. Other people have used other methods with success. I hear feeding garlic helps, as do some medications. Since I’ve used UV lights (and with great success) I have no experience with any other methods… I hope someone else can help you out with them…

“White stringy poop” is a sign of parasitic illness… but sick fish don’t eat much therefore don’t poop much… sick fish also act lethargic…

I think I'm just being paranoid :screwy::screwy::screwy:

I was still a little concerned when I got home last night, almost seemed to be swimming erratically at times (almost like something was chasing it), but its very possible I'm not used to their behavior patterns and am overworrying.

I saw the 2 swimming together actively and eating at least twice last night, and again this morning, which calmed my nerves a bit.

You may be right about the subdominant thing.

No white stringy poo. I'll keep a close eye on them and post if anything changes.

Thanks Nutcase.

:nilly:

I'm not sure if they had established a pecking order by day 9, but the current subdominate EBJD is on the bottom in both pictures.

They used to be pretty much the same color. Now the subdominant one is noticably pale...I'm not sure if this is because of dominance or stress or possible disease/etc. I had noticed a good amount of head shaking and scratching a couple weeks ago. I treated my tank for 7 days with melafix and pimafix for an unrelated issue (one of my silver dollars had what looked like body fungus that caused it to scratch and it took off some scales in the process, but it looks good as new now, just finished treating the tank Thursday).

Back on point...I haven't noticed head shaking or scratching recently, so I'm hoping thats a non issue.

Hey Nutcase when you say you use UV lights ,Do you mean a UV sterilizer or do you have UV lights above your fish tank.If you use lights do you use the germicidal UVC bulbs or the UVA/UVB bulbs. And do you leave them on all the time or for just a short time each day.Thank you in advance for your answers.

No problem,no need to say your sorry:D.

I had two blue jacks awhile back and after about a month they were both dead.I was very upset:cry:,at the time i knew nothing about UV sterilizers.I've been planing on getting two more and just thought i'd ask some ?.

Speaking of ? here's some.Is there a certain size when they become less susceptible to parasites and no longer need the UV sterilizer? And if they do get intestinal parasites what is the best treatment for it?I used a parasite treatment on the last two and that did not work.I've had no probs keeping other cichlids healthy.Again thank you for any ansewers.

OOh yah BPags52 nice blue jacks.
