PLEASE HELP!!! MY AROWANA MAY BE DYING!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wouldn't count the fish out just yet. But like it's been said, I would leave the tank alone completely. Just leave the tank running like you normally would. This will give you time to read all the material that has been recommended for you. If the fish stops breathing I would then throw in his towel.

Thanks guys you've finally realize that I'm not doing this as a joke I'm very serious about this and I really appreciate the people that understand my situation and are trying to help me by giving useful advice. but it comes down to this, will the fish have a fighting chance or is all hope lost for the fish.

which of the three? the two still goin strong obviously have as good a chance as any...

as for the forgotten one it has a fighting chance yes, ya gotta keep it in clean well airated water, the right temp, and the rest will play out. it's about 50/50 if it makes it from what i've read. no need to be poking at it or anything it will just make things worse

It depends if the tank is cycled. The one that is dying right now, its a coin toss. The other 2 shouldnt be in the tank either cause that size of tank they will die in it shortly. If you or your mom had the knowledge on cycling, maintenance, proper care etc, then your fish would have a chance. But 3 aros in a 40 gallon is doomed.

After learning proper care, you guys should think about what type of fish you want and if you have the commitment to take care of them. If you really want an aro, are you willing to buy the 300 gallon tank whehn it gets bigger?

Alright I'm off to bed, typing all this on an iPod has killed my fingers so I'll check this out again tomorrow. First off I would like to thank all for the responsiveness of this thread and to all who are trying help me further my knowledge in fish keeping and hopefully continue to expand my abilities with this as of now new hobbie of mine. Feel free to keep posting as I'm not done with this yet just gonna go to sleep now that's all. Good night everyone and I hope we can continue this in a bit.

I'm guessing your lfs is closed now so there isn't a whole lot you can do right now since I'm guessing you wouldn't have a lot of the additives that may help your chances. How long ago did you get the two newer aros? If they are still alive and returnable then I would do that first thing tomorrow since you won't have a tank ready for what they require. A pivotal question at this point is has your tank been cycled ever?

I am of Asian decent and luckily my dad is a fish keeper that understands how to take care of them aswell. However I understand that your mom is a hardass like mine. What you have to do is stand your ground and constantly tell her that shes doing it wrong. If she doesn't listen turn to your dad and tell him to return the aros for you. If they still don't listen then they pay for being hardasses. What you need to do is have someone on the forum post a picture of how big a silver gets inscale to a person and show it to her. If she really doesn't listen then I feel sorry for those aros.

go to your pet store or walmart and get some cycle... it may help speed up the cycling process for you and reduce the stress on your arrows. get some dechlorinator whie your at it if you didnt dechlorinate your water when you put it in. my mom was actually the same way a few years back. she had bettas and she couldnt figure out why they were dying. after some investigating i found out she was dumping out all their water and puttin them in a cup while she poured new water in straight from the tap. luckly she learned pretty quick after i taught her the basics lol

what are you doing for filtration?

Ditto. From the sounds of it, it seems like you were doing water changes like one would do for a goldfish bowl won at a carnival.

If the store won't take the two newer arowanas back, maybe you could find other aquarists who are willing and able to provide proper care of them.

I am also of Asian decent and have a mom that has made some pretty outrageous impulse purchases on fish (which has subsequently resulted in, like another has already said, her spending a substantial amount of money ($3000+) for the proper care of those fish).

Read some of the articles others have provided and help your mom start out on the right foot. Once you both have gotten the basics of aquaculture down, then you can get into the more exotic and demanding species :)
