Very nice possible purchase men :) The best suplement would be zoomed´s reptivite. Make shure you have your refrigerator full stocked with dark leafys like the ones you would use for a green ig and get a good quality uv ligth.

Thanks! The Reptivite comes with or without D3. Which ones better?

We live next door (literally) to a grocery store, so we have constant access to fresh veggies, plus we have a garden. We plan on growing all the veggies this little guy is going to need in the future, at least during the summer months.

I've been reading up on green iggy care and diet, since its pretty similar for the rhino. I've got a 65w halogen floodlight I can use, if that will work, or I can go out and purchase a specific wattage or UV bulb.

I would use with D3, the flood ligth would be ok for heat and ligth but you also need a uv one.

Congrats.

On my earlier post I meant to say that since she liked the fish she should like this guy, I was right, just didn't talk right again.

We picked the terrarium up from my parents house this afternoon and moved it home. I've got it set up in the front room. I'm really pissed, because as we were setting it down, I cracked the bottom pane of glass :irked:. Fortunately the guy who built it put two panes of glass on the bottom, and only one of them cracked, so its still water proof (it was the outside pane of glass that cracked).

I may pick up another pane of glass and laminate it on the outside of the broken piece, just to help secure it better and prevent it from cracking any worse or breaking off pieces. But its good for now.

Dimensions:
60" high, 34" wide, 30" deep (front to back).

I'm going to keep it upright for now, since the iggy is still a little guy, and we don't have a ton of extra space. In the near future I'll probably lay it down on its back so that he will have a lot more floor space.

Also, what's the best substrate for a rhino iguana? Would cypress mulch be fine for him? I've got a whole pile of driftwood out back that I just cleaned. I'm letting it bake in the sun on the concrete to dry it out good. I'm going to select a few pieces to add to the terrarium so he can climb and position one close to the top so that he can bask under the light. I may try cutting a piece to fit and then siliconing it a foot or two under the top, as a basking platform... We'll see. I'm also going to build a hide box for the bottom, as well as a platform for a food dish and water bowl. I'm going to try to find a cheap water mister on craigslist, but if I can't I'll just mist daily like I do my ball python.

The ambient air in the room he's in is about 79-80F during the day, maybe 70-75F at night. Is that warm enough, or should I go ahead and invest in a heating pad to put under the substrate in the bottom of the cage? I'll have a heat lamp and uv bulb on top for basking (the top is a mesh screen, so it won't block uv).

Nice Conner...
Good to hear that he's a healthy guy and not draggin his pelvic area..

I would look at either getting a heating pad or a hot rock... Iggs need to warm their bodies to help them digest their food...
When i had my igg i had a heat rock inside a small waste basket and he would go in there too sleep at night. I have a heat lamp that had a basking area temp of 95-100 degrees... I'm not sure if rhino's are the same as green igg but i had a large margarine tub filled with water and heated with a heating pad, the warm water helped when they would go poop...
I have a tremendous book at home, i'll see if i can find the name of it...

I have the 1st edition to this book... but this guy has written probably the best book on Green Iguana Care..

http://www.iguana.com/ a definite read for any Green Igg owner

Anapsid.org makes a good read as well, including several green iggy recipes and all that. Keep off the hot rocks at all costs, there have been lizard pies made by that. To be serious, heat rocks cause burns, with ranging severity each time it is tested, because the heat is direct.

Wrap it in a towel.. that's what i did... I never allowed direct flesh contact..

True. Consider this, heat rocks were made to be a natural looking heat source. Of course, theory is theory and it doesn't always work out practical, and the whole idea became a frying failure. So if you wrap it with a towel, it defeats the original purpose. It can be done though, but I prefer the safer options like heating pads.
