Sand and young rays.

Stingray breeder removes sand and losses stop.

Alleykat removes sand and rays get better.

Abortedsoul removes sand and rays quit 'curling.'

Irbanjaxed did not remove substrate and stingray dies.

Common Sense would tell me that sand is the common denominator... and you can't say its just because they are fresh imported wild reticulata, because how would it be the same for a captive bred leopoldi??? Are you going to try to argue that the most prolific stingray producer in american history has an issue with 'water quality' or something otherwise when he specifically stated - The losses stopped when the sand was removed.

the 1st pic too fine for my liking and look sharp..the 2nd pic. more or less like what i have in my tank..with 2 marbles, 1 motoro.. but not that thick...

Well miles, how will you explain the fact that the german breeders can keep their ray babyes on fine sand, without losing 40%?

And how can you be sure that there wasent a killer bacteria in mikes sand?

Again, the germans dont have this problem (or any breeders i have heard of).

Also, i will ask the 3 owners (and mike) to send me a sample of their sand. So we can have a very close look at it (i will pay the shipping).

Then we will see if it looks special.

Oh, and a pic of my old sp. colombia pup. This sand is as fine as it gets. ;)

And look in Alleykat´s thread. His rectis is dying. Looks like removing the sand dident help much?

Comparing all these situations is invalid, to many unknown factors with each situation...

Great idea! Takes the discussion to another level....

Anybody know the major differences if any in fish VS ray gills?

Miles: "The substrate is the problem.. if you see shiny little glass-like flex, it has silica.. crushed glass is no good for their disc, gills, etc.."

Their gills? :screwy:

You said stress to me. ;)

And silica is not crushed glass.

You make glass from silica. ;)

And why put crushed glass into aquarium sand? :screwy: would make the sand very expensive. Better sell it to a bottle factory for a good price so they can make new bottels of it.

Just admit that you thourght that silica was cruched glass. And let your little myth die. ;)

OH! And i just got the news! they have opned the sale of rays in brazil now! :D:D

Farse!!

You vwin again!

Hopefully magical liger breeders can tell us the magic secrets to keep alive young rays on fine sand!!

<- tired of typing and arguing

Im gonna go buy a retic today and put it on some fine white sand and kill it to prove my point..

look at me!
