Sand, Sand, Sand, Sand, Sand, Sand & Sand

For pics you can check lot sof pics in my photobucket, especially the goldfish.

The Estes' Marine Sand Ultra Reef is silica based with a polymer coat (so it won't even cause the brown algae problem so many cheapo sands can cause). It comes in black, white, beige (barely off white) and blue. I usually use and recommend either solid black or a half and half mix of black and white (with a painted black background).

It is just large enough to sink quickly when the fish mouth through it and is uniform so you don't get the compaction problem and other issues with so many other sands.

bump. Thinking of doing sand. Anyone got a direct link to black pool filter sand?

If you find some, I'd be interested too. I pay $22 per 20# of Tahitian Moon right now. Just bought another bag today actually.. :grinno:

That link like 3 or 4 posts up by baseballman would be the type you find at Home Depot or Lowes. I think HD carries Quikrete sands, just a matter of them carrying the PFS specifically or not. Could probably just call and see.

Has anyone ever found PFS at a home depot or lowes? Nearest leslie's pool supply is in NJ and I can't drive :(

I know Lowes carries some in 50lb bags, (actually I believe it's in a box), but here in Georgia it was running about $32 for a 50 lb bag!!!! :WHOA:

Luckily I found a Leslie's pool supply close to where I work in McDonough and was able to pick up PFS from them for about $8 per 50lb bag. I haven't opened the bags yet, so can't comment on the color or consistency.

Can someone make this sand thread a sticky?

I cannot...I'm sorry:(

I use 3m colorquartz in my two tanks. I think I might just be one of the lucky ones who has a supplier right down the road? I was under the impression (when doing initial research on sand) that the stuff was hard to find/out of production... I got a 50lb bag of black & a 50lb bag of 'chocolate' between the two tanks. In the 65 its about 70/30 chocolate to black & (obviously) the opposite in the 55. I absolutely LOVE this sand...looks fantastic, settles extremely fast, my cichlids dig in it all day long & they're fine etc etc. Cleaning the black sand sucked (turned my white bucket & tub black:irked:) but other than that it was no big deal.

Oh....under my lights the 'chocolate' looks straight red. I really like it now but it was a pretty upsetting surprise when I first got it in the tank. I have pics uploaded here if you want to see :)

I'm having a sand issue myself. My current sand that came with my tank is too fine... I love the white texture but easily gets sucked up.

Need to find the good stuff... :(
