sheading rays

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i know people keeping rays in a PH of 8.5.... whats the problem with your water?? its seriously best to just leave your water the way it is....

its not the high 8.5 that concerns me its the 6's, and i wont leave it, i have other fish to concern myself with oter then just one stringray...that why they make these test, and have ph up and ph down, and 100 more products todo with ph balance....Im at 6.4 right now, but its doesnt magically come out of the tap at that level. i have to raise it, quite a bit, witch is why i do it before hand. either way is isnt the problem, maybe if it was 4.0 or 9.0 i can see it having this effect to my ray but not in the 6+ range. its something else.......

no they really just make those products for suckers who wanna waste there water... funny ive kept soo many fish in what ever comes out of my tap... but hey what the hell do we know... we are not the ones adding chemicals to our water and stressing our stingray to the point it sheds its slime coat...

KISS method needed right there buddy:D

try it for a few week's without adding stuff to your water and see if it makes a difference

no i use water softners and test it before i had it to the tank. if there is a signifigant different i will ajust before adding any water to the tank.

Okay I'm kinda lost if your adding water softeners after it comes out of the tap or are you getting your water for your tanks after a household watersoftner? If you have a household water softener get your tank water before it enters the softener.
What parameters is your water out of the tap?
I've tried chemically altered my water before and have never had it stay at a steady state. Try filling a garbage container with water adjust your water parameters chemically and stick a circulating pump in there. Test the water after 2 days and I will gaurantee that the ph will have changed and that is with no bioload.
If your trying to lower your ph mix tap water with r/o water and if your trying to raise it add crushed coral to your filter.

look, your ray is in some deep **** right now. Solution is to stop messing with your water. Do your water change, add your prime, and walk away. Stop making it so difficult. I dont think your tap water is gunna come out 6 on one day and 8 on another. Leave it the way it is. I would put money down if you start doing that your ray will stop sheading slime coats...

okay, ha im not a chemicals junky, i would rather not add anything at all but occasionally i do.....i just talked to the guy that i have bought and learned almost everything from. This guy is a genius. i drove out to talk to him about it today and then he laughed and told me it was okay...about a month ago he told me my arowana was at a good age to start feeding him earth worms....now, that's his main diet, and if he doesn't eat them all the ray will grab them off the bottom....something in the worms changed the chemical waste output and slightly raises ammonia....a small amount at a time, like .10ppm-.25ppm every week, but it didn't jump up or down enough for me to really concern myself about it. he gave me something to break it down and assured me it wasn't electrical, ph, or anything else.....so i just did my first of a 4 day treatment, we'll see how that goes

everyone generally seemed concerned for the ray witch is great but maybe, just maybe a few of you wanna reconsider how you give advice or explain personal experience. a few times after reading this i was really pissed off. really not why i joined. im here to share and learn, not be ridiculed because you diddnt understand what was going on.....

I'm really not trying to piss you off but there is something wrong here. You said this has been going on for several months so feeding earthworms about a month ago would not be the cause. Now if your getting ammonia increases there is something wrong there and could be the problem. We are doing the best we can with the info we're getting. Some of the people on here are the top of there field and work extensively with rays. I'm not saying your friend is not smart but give these people a chance to help. The reason some of them get upset is they spend there time trying to help and people won't take there advice but sooner argue and it would get frustrating after awhile. Best of luck with your ray and I hope you figure it out
