no way they should change their name. would open the door for tons of other teams like chiefs, braves, blackhawks, etc

I think out of good faith other teams would follow suit. Teams move to other cities and change names, what's the difference?

What happens when some individual, representing a small group demands the Canucks change their name since it can be used in a derogatory manner. Or any other team because it is personally offensive. Sorry but yes, the numbers do make a difference. If a majority step forth and say it is offensive to the entire Indian nation then ok, change it.

Going to guess at your previous conversation and agree somewhat. No,I don't use that word because I understand the history behind it but I worked with guys who used it all the time between each other. That's why when I hear individuals complain about the use from others but glorify it themselves it loses something.

Lastly, at what point do we stop being so afraid of words? Covering them up and pretending they never happened will never solve the worlds ills.

You're slightly off. That word means nothing to me but I understand it bothers some other people. I laugh it off everytime I'm called it

If the canucks were an American team, they might be offended by it

Braves chiefs blackhawks are not slurs. I think some people are insensitive because they have never experienced racism. From what I'm seeing on here in this thread is an issue with institutional racism which would explain the "majority likes it. its just a name get over it." By that logic a lot of ignorance would still take place.

Still, at what point does a word or phrase become offensive as a whole opposed to merely insensitive.

Maybe when the people its directed toward say it offends them? Not the people on the outside looking in saying every cliche known to man to keep it status quo

So if I find something offensive can I demand it be removed and get my way or does it not count being a non minority and therefore can't comprehend being singled out?

According to you it doesn't mean squash unless everyone is offended.

Some g@y people (but not all) spoke out about the term that's g@y and being the progressive thinkers and society that we are the term has all but disappeared. Why is this different to you? We all knew the phrase had nothing to do with homosexuality.
I don't understand the its widely accepted and doesn't effect me approach.

No one else sees the irony of this thread? A group of people being basically attempting to force another group of people to change their name? Possibly involving a lawsuit. Hmmmmm....People defending the people pretending to be offended IMO. If their was a hockey team called the Palefaces would you be offended? Canuck is a slang term for Canadians...but it's not derogatory. Does that need to go too? It offends me because I watched kids in the hall growing up...is that all it takes? Is Canuck now offensive because I said so? What if I start a website and recruit people to say that the name "jello" offends my people because it is making a mockery of our native jellyfish? Any merit to that? If it offends you don't watch. If it bothers you grow up. I'm honestly more worried about their risk for skin cancer then their name...

P.S. Go Bucs!

There you go generalizing again and making assumptions, changing around what I said. No, not everyone needs to be offended but do we remove a word just to satisfy a few.

On the homosexual issue, you're right, that word had another meaning as does fa***. Again, knowing many I've heard them use those terms to describe themselves. Maybe it's context. That was going to be the next question, what about non racial slurs. Are they offensive since it targets a group instead of a race.
