Small cat suggestions

A jaguar is a good choice, size wise. They tend to stay hidden though
 
I kept my pictus with cherry barbs and white clouds he never hid even tho he was the only cat in there, it was heavily planted tho

Precisely. He knew he was always inches away from cover and he is the king of darting... That's another way to prevent a pictus from hiding or hiding too much. Of course, heavily planted or furnished tanks are not always the case / possible / preferable.

Good choice and very pretty to look at. Mine is always hidden though.
 
Yup. They are maniacal hiders.

One can do this to see them but they will always be quite inactive as long as there is a glimmer of day light (although there appear to be rare exceptions, which are hard to rationalize):

Mine now comes out no problem once the smell of food is in there, he goes crazy scowering the tank for it and is gluttonous. Also he's grown maybe half a inch and has gotten lots of girth, his patterns seem to be starting to break up as well.
