the tank is in the basement so no sunlight. If i was to get a uv filter what wattage would be needed?

I had this happen to my 270G...algae bloom that would just not go away. I tried keeping the lights off, covered tank with blankets to keep any light from hitting the tank, I went overkill on my filtration (I was running a 40 gallon sump full of bio-balls, and two Rena XP3's), tried reducing my feedings...I tried everything (except I did not want to buy anymore equipment- ex- UV). I came across Tetra Algae Control...literally, within 5 hours, my water was crystal clear.

Try dosing a bit less than recommended on the bottle and see if it works. I hated the idea of putting chemicals into my tank, but I was fed up...there were no visible effects on my fish...all seemed unaffected. I only had to use this product once, and I haven't had an algae bloom since.

Ok i was reading that the tetra algea controll Poly [Oxyethylene, (Dimethyliminio) Ethylene (Dimethyliminio) Ethylene Dichloride] will kill half my fish soo i am not trying that. I found that a bale of barley would be usefull.
Still waiting on what watted to get if i come into some x mas money!

...where did you read that? The label states it is safe for use with fish and planted tanks.

The only precaution I saw was, "Do not use in aquariums with invertebrates or crustaceans e.g. crabs, shrimps, or crayfish."

I had Clown Loaches, Bala Sharks, Silver Dollars and Oscars and they did not appear to be affected. The product worked for me within hours and I did lots of frequent water changes afterwards to remove as much as possible of the product from the water.

If you are worried about it's effect on the fish and you have tried all other methods (Block all sunlight, reduce feeding, frequent large water changes etc), then I think your only other option is to buy a UV.
