Sports and fitness 2021

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I ran a 100K race 4 weeks ago, and I have a 100 mile race in 4 weeks. 2020 was a was a wash due to Covid.

How do you even prepare for those type of distances running? When I used to do up to 150km rides on my bike (not now, i'm going back a few years) I used to build up my distances slowly. Regular five hours in the saddle, then six hours, gradually building up to around the seven hour mark. Long long hours, and that's cycling which is way quicker than running. I imagine you'd have to set aside huge blocks of training time to build up to your distances?

I've been running ultramarathon distances for the last 7 years or so. Your body just sort of gets used to it. My longest training runs are never more than 50K. Before a 100 mile race I like to warm up with a 50 mile race 6-8 weeks prior. On weekends I do a 20 mile run Saturday and a 10-15 mile run the next day. During the week my shortest runs are 6 miles. I always take at least 1 day off each week. At my peak training weeks I never exceed 80 miles.

My hat is off to you sir, you have my utmost respect. Although my thing is cycling I do try and get the odd run in once in a while, but only a few kilometers at a time. And running is brutal to me. I know in time my "cycling" legs will adapt as I run more but I could never ever see a time where i'd be going out for a casual 50k run!!! Lol, I love my bike even more now i've just read your post!

Likewise amigo. I was sidelined with a stress fracture on my femur a year ago, and I was riding about 20 miles a day. It was slowly killing me. Cycling, either on road or trail, is brutal.

Yeah but the thing is when you're running you probably look rather dapper in your nice kit and your fancy running shoes.

I have to wear damn lycra, and look a complete twonk, especially taking into consideration the unsightly bulges too!! lol.

100 miles is freakin nuts man. I can only get about 5-7 miles before my back, hips, and hamstrings start to go numb. Tbh, I cant imagine putting that amount of time into a run. I got things to do! Not meant to slight you of course, nothing but admiration from me for that kind of stamina.

Wow, I can’t even run 20 miles straight, I get too tired unless I bring a snack with me lol. I usually run 4-12 miles each day, and in the summer I can get close to 70+ miles in a week. But that’s inspiring how much you run, maybe one day, I’ll try a marathon.

A 50 mile race as a warm up?
Thats crazy, if ran 50 miles I wouldnt be considering it a warm up, it would probably lead to hospitalisation.

Us mere mortals, if we've got any sense, would just run straight to the hospital! The kind staff would resuscitate our sorry arses, change our heavily soiled underwear, provide us with a nice clean puke free top, and send us on our wobbly way. Lol.

I think it would require a weeks stay before they sent me on my way.
It's funny how something one person thinks is a warmup is inconceivable to someone else.
